Out Running the Pack
Wednesday, October 1, 2008 • Posted October 1, 2008

Saturday, the Cowgirls and Punchers drove all the way out west to Ozona. The annual “Running with the Lions” cross country meet was held at the Ozona Country Club. It began at 9:00 a.m. with the Jr. High divisions and followed by the High School divisions. It was a large, well run meet, with over twenty different school represented.

Finishing 4th overall for the Cowgirls was a great accomplishment, especially since they were missing a key runner from the team. No other 1A teams that competed at the Ozona meet placed higher than the Mason Cowgirls. The course was a bit shy of 3200m, but the girls posted some great times. Lydia Bjork almost chased down the lead runner with her time of a 12:48 to finish 2nd overall. Close behind was Brittany Estes finishing 6th with a 12:58. Other Cowgirls that had great runs were Kaitlyn Cavness (14:00) and Myles Banner (15:04). These four young ladies shaved off quite a bit of time this weekend.

The Punchers came home with yet another Championship on Saturday. This time the team was led by Marcelo Segura who ran his best time of the season with a 17:55 and placed 3rd. Tomas was just steps behind in 4th, while Ramiro Casas improved slightly to earn a medal in 18th place. Without teammate Jorge Morales, the younger runners really stepped it up. Manuel Segura, Melesio Segura, and Zen Steward posted their best times of the year with a 19:30, 19:33, and 20:22. Without the improvements of these three young men, the Championship would not have been possible.

The high school teams will be running at the Tech Center in Junction on Wednesday afternoon. The meet starts at 1:45 p.m. with the High School boys divisions followed by the High School girls.

In 10 days, the annual Pride of the Hill Country Cross Country Meet will be held at the City Park. The meet is Saturday, October 11th. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the high school boys, followed by the high school girls and then the Jr. High runners. The meet should run from 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. Hope many of you will be able to come out and support the Punchers and Cowgirls. Anyone interested in volunteering, please contact Sherry Keller at the high school or by email: Thanks in advance for your help and support!

The District Cross Country Meet has been moved to Bandera. It will still be held on Wednesday, October 29th.
