Ella Marie Smathers

Ella Mae Smathers, a lifetime resident of Llano County, passed away October 2, 2008, in Llano, Texas, at the age of 99.

She was born on July 24, 1909, to Ella (Grenwelge) and Herman Heven in Llano, Texas. Mrs. Smathers was a member of the Home Demonstration Club and of the Valley Spring Methodist Church where she played the piano for many years. She was married to Forrest Smather on July 24, 1927, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Smathers is also preceded in death by her parents, sons, Lester Lyn Smathers and Marion Glen Smathers; grandson, Bradley Roy Lange; two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include daughters, Frances Barrack of Lubbock, Texas, Harriet Lange and husband Pug of Mason, Texas, Marilyn Reid and husband Jim of Abilene, Texas; sons, James Smathers and wife Pat of Lufkin, Texas, Winfred “PeeWee” Smathers and wife Mary Lou of Valley Spring; daughters-in-Law, Carolyn Smathers of Waco, Texas, Mayme Smathers of Austin, Texas; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel in Llano at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jenny Tucker officiating. Interment followed at the Valley Spring Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were her beloved grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any charity of choice.
