You had better had your popcorn and coke ready this past Thursday when the 7th Grade Punchers took on the visitors from Blanco. The game was tight from start to finish and it came down to literally the final play of the game to determine the winner.
Both teams moved the ball in period one but were unable to score. The Punchers out finessed their opponent when Cody Wood placed a quick-kick on the Blanco 1 yard line. Blanco had their work cut out for them, but did a great job of driving the ball and using up the clock. Puncher defensive units did a great job namely, Elliot Bibb, Raul Silguero, Jason Berreles, Logan Davel, and Drigo Martinez. Despite their good efforts, Blanco scored with 9 seconds left on the clock before the half ended. The extra point attempt was foiled when Elliot Bibb picked off the pass and took it the distance which left the score 2-6 in favor of Blanco.
The 3rd period was void of any scoring but their was plenty of good hits by the Punchers. Silguero, Wood, and Bibb ran the ball well, behind the blocks of Leret Hemphill, Hector Medina, Odie Ortiz, Ethan McKinney, and Coby Velez.
In period four, the Punchers launched a 43 yard drive that ended with a Silguero touchdown, the PAT failed but the Punchers lead 8-6. Blanco battled back and scored on a reverse pass. On the following point after, Ortiz and Silguero caused a Blanco fumble and Leret Hemphill scooped up the ball and again scored the valuable 2 points, making the score 10-12.
The Mason boys had one final attempt for the win. Bibb had a good return on the next kick-off, pushing the ball all the way to the Blanco 41 yard line. With only seconds remaining, Bibb hit Hemphill on the throwback. Hemphill was finally brought down on the Blanco 6 yard line. Despite the efforts to call time-out, the period was called leaving the Punchers just a little short, 10-12.
I can’t say enough about the effort by our guys. They are getting better everyday and every game. Next week we will combine the teams and take on the visiting team from Irion County. Kick-off at 5:30.
