The Mason Punchers hosted the Christoval Cougars last week, and though the young men from up northwest put up a valiant fight, the Punchers were able to end the evening with a 39-6 victory.
During the first quarter, the two teams spent most of their time learning about their opponents and testing various offensive strategies. It was near the end of the first quarter, with 3:24 remaining, that Justin Yonker tossed off a pass to A. J. Martinez for a 50-yard score. Yonker followed with a successful kick and the score was 7-0 in favor of the Punchers.
In the second quarter, the Cougars rallied and came back only one minute into play with a 60-yard pass play from Christopher Housely to John Hernandez to put the score at 7-6. Only minutes later, Mason responded as Yonker tossed off a pass to Dustin Tatsch, and another Yonker kick, to put the score at 14-6. Only minutes later, the Punchers scored again, this time on a beautiful 54-yard run by A. J. Martinez to put the score going into halftime at 20-6.
After the half, Mason used many of its younger and less seasoned players, allowing many of the starters to gain some valuable rest and recuperative time. Still, the Punchers proved to be a formidable force, as they scored near the end of the third quarter on an Adam Timms run and a Justin Yonker kick to put the score at 27-7.
Christoval, already very short of personnel, lost some key support at the end of the third quarter, and struggled to hold off the Punchers for the remaining fourth quarter of play.
Four minutes into the quarter, Zach Hudson, filling a new role for the young man, scored on a short run for the Punchers putting the score at 33-6. Then, half way through the quarter, Estevan Villarreal recovered a Cougar fumble and ran 75-yards for the games final score, putting the numbers on the board at 39-6.
This week, Mason will travel to Mertzon to take on Irion County.
