Mason vs. Irion County, Week Seven
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 • Posted October 15, 2008

At the beginning of the year the Irion County Hornets had the ear marks of a team that could very well win the district. The Hornets roster was loaded with a talented senior class.

The 2008 season held great promise as All-District players such as, QB Garrett Barnett, RB Bryan Kenely, and 6' 6" 225 lbs man/child Wyatt Terral were prepared to lead the charge of 18 returning lettermen. To compliment this loaded cannon, the Irion County School District also went out and hired first year coach Donny Funderburg who was an assistant coach with Liberty Hill and Lake Travis, when both of those teams won the State Championship. On paper it looked like a lethal formula.

As expected, the Hornets came out of the gates quickly winning their first two games. Soon thereafter the wheels started to fall off as the entire roster became desimated with injuries and the Hornets fell into a flat spin. Over the last two weeks they have given up 75 points while not even getting a sniff of the end zone.

Now before you all start licking your chops let me tell you what we are hearing out of the Hornets camp. The word is that the Hornets have used the last three weeks to get healthy and expect to be ready to rock Friday night. Now the question becomes: Is this gamesmanship? Or are the Hornets truly ready to throw a knock out punch?

Right now you have four teams bunched at the top of District 29; Mason, Menard, Junction, and Rocksprings. Irion County needs a victory this week over the Punchers to stay alive. Christoval and Eldorado are finished. The game you want to keep your eye on on Friday night is the Rocksprings vs Junction game. The outcome of this one will give us a pretty good idea as to what we will be up against next week when the Angoras of Rocksprings come calling. The Angoras have only given up 7 points all year while scoring 169.

The Class 1A State Top 25 Rankings saw numerous changes this week with several teams falling out and several teams moving up. Menard slid into the #24 spot and Junction vaulted itself to #21. As you can see the stakes are getting higher and higher, so let's all make the drive to Mertzon this week and get behind our Punchers as they make their march to the playoffs!!!

Rocksprings 2-0 5-0

Junction 3-0 6-1

Menard 2-0 6-0

Mason 2-1 4-3

Irion County 0-2 2-4

Eldorado 0-3 2-5

Christoval 0-3 1-6
