Thursday evening was just about as perfect as anyone could ask for. Resent rains had cleaned the air and put a green on the grass. The 7th and 8th Punchers combined to take on the visiting Hornets from Irion County. The coin was tossed then the hitting began.
Mason deferred the first possession because everyone was geared up to play defense, and play they did. Irion County went three and out due to some very good defense. Leading the defensive unit was, Zane Graves, Tanner Dutton, Dale Cunningham, Rio Schmidt, Brandon McGowan, and Kolby Yonker. The Hornets had a bad snap on their punt effort and the Punchers took advantage of the opportunity quickly. Taking possession on the Hornet 11 yard line, Rio Schmidt followed Graves off tackle then the score on the first offensive down. The PAT was a nice throw and catch from Cunningham to Dutton and the Punchers lead 8-0.
In the 2nd period of play you may have thought you were caught in a “groundhog day” vortex because the Hornets had the same misfortune with their deep snap. The Punchers took control on the Hornet’s 27 yard line, then Graves followed the trap block of McGowan for the score. The PAT failed but the Punchers were out in front by the score of 14-0. Mason scored again on their next possession, again with a nice run by Graves, then Cunningham tacked on the PAT making the score 22-0 at half time.
As was mentioned the 7th Grade combined with the 8th in this game and the second half was in the hands of the 7th Grade team. Two possession passed between the teams then the Hornets scored on a nice 6 yard run by their full-back, but the PAT failed, 22-6, Punchers.
The Punchers were quick to answer on this score, and running backs Berreles, Silguero, Palacio, Wood, and Bibb each took turns moving the ball down the field behind some nice blocking by linemen, Michael Dyer, Drigo Martinez, Gabriel Lingle, Leret Hemphill, and Logan Davel. Silguero then broke free and ran in the next score from the Hornet 32 yard line. Emilio Palacio tacked on the PAT which closed out the scoring , Punchers 30, Hornets 6.
Great combined effort of both teams. The defensive groups did especially well and the 8th Grade linemen played their best game. Next week the Punchers will travel to Rocksprings for a 5:30 kickoff.
