The JV Punchers traveled to Winters last Thursday night to take on the Blizzards in a highly anticipated matchup that featured two good teams with stellar records and high expectations. The game was hard fought until the final whistle with the Blizzards coming out on top in the end 18-13.
The Blizzards struck first after a Puncher three and out to take the lead 6-0. The Punchers answered two possessions later after a fumble recovery with an Ethan Hudson touchdown run and successful PAT to take the lead 7-6. The Punchers tacked on another score in the 2nd quarter as Dillon Estes found Jacob Bibb in the end zone to increase the lead to 13-6 at the half. The Blizzards responded early in the 3rd quarter with a score after forcing a Puncher turnover to narrow the margin to 13-12. The score would remain the same until midway through the 4th quarter when the Blizzards would score on a toss around the end to retake the lead 18-13. The Puncher’s next drive would stall and the Blizzards proceeded to run out the clock.
The game featured great efforts from Puncher defenders Jacob Bibb, Zach Graves, and Chance Stockbridge who were free to make plays thanks to the defensive line of Cristian Orta, Dyllan Hofmann, Michael Williams, Ethan Hudson, and Nicolas Navarette who filled gaps and contained the Blizzard runners.
Offensively the Punchers were led by the rushing of Ethan Hudson and Ben Bjork, with Dillon Estes, Jacob Bibb, and Chance Stockbridge making plays in the passing game as well. These playmakers were allowed to do so thanks to the efforts of the offensive line consisting of Briggs Jones, Korey Zavala, Brodey Taylor, Cristian Orta, and Dyllan Hofmann who cleared lanes and protected the quarterback.
The game was truly a great game to be a part of, and the coaching staff could not be more proud of our young men and the effort that they put forth. Another great game lies in store this week as the always tough Blanco Panthers come to Mason. The game time is 6:00, and we hope to see you there cheering on the Punchers.
