Wednesday, October 22, 2008 • Posted October 22, 2008

The Mason Punchers continued their push to secure a berth in the playoffs on Friday with a 61-13 victory over the Irion County Hornets.

The Punchers would take three minutes of the first quarter before they made their first score, a short run by Jared Hudson, followed by a Justin Yonker kick, placing the score at 7-0.

Irion County came back a short time later with the first of their two game scores, a pass from Garrett Barnett to Marshall Miller, and the score was 7-6.

Mason would score once more in the first quarter, with only one minute of play remaining, on another Jared Hudson run, and the score going into the second quarter was 14-6.

In the second quarter, Mason scored three minutes in when Jared Hudson made the final carry, followed by another Yonker kick, and the score was 21-6.

Mason kicked off, Irion County started their return, fumbled, and Mason recovered and moved the ball back to within spitting distance of the goal. Justin Yonker tossed off a 24-yard pass to A. J. Martinez, and followed up the touchdown with another kick to put the score at 28-6 with 8:21 remaining in the first half.

Mason would wait until just before the end of the quarter to score again. This time, Yonker drilled a 37-yard pass to Dustin Tatsch, and AGAIN kicked the extra point, and the score going into half time was 35-6.

The third quarter, mercifully for Irion County, only had one Mason score. That occurred rather early in the period on a Jared Hudson run, and the score was 41-6, where it remained until the fourth quarter.

Mason started the quarter with a four-yard Adam Timms score and another Yonker kick to tally up 48-6.

Shortly afterwards, Timms again carried the final ball for another score, and the total was 54-6 with 7:21 remaining.

The final Mason score of the evening was on an interception by Chase Crouch which he ran 30-yards into glory, followed by the inevitable Yonker kick, and the score was 61-6 with 6:19 remaining.

Irion County would finally score once more with less than two minutes of play remaining on a Garrett Barnett run, followed by a Barnett kick, and the final score was 61-13.

This week, Mason will take on the tough Rocksprings Angoras, a team that has only seen one loss, and that to Junction. This is also Mason's homecoming, so the night promises a LOT of action.
