Cross Country Update
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 • Posted October 29, 2008

Last week, the cross country teams competed in Bandera. This would be the last practice meet of the season. The conditions were ideal for an afternoon run. Just as the race began, a cold front began to blow through and settle down just as the varsity girls’ division were about to begin. There were about 175 runners is each division and there were many great teams there competing.

Seven of our Puncher runners posted their best times: Marcelo Segura (12th, 16:59), Jorge Morales (55th, 18:32), Ramiro Casas (63rd, 18:39), Melesio Segura (67th, 18:41), Manuel Segura (69th, 18:44), Zen Steward (89th, (19:10), and Andy Duarte (131st, 20:17). The course was a full 5K course so the boys got a good idea of what type of goals to shoot for a District next week. Also running hard for the Punchers was Tomas Callejas (25th, 17:33) and Jeremy Duarte (114th, 19:43). As a team, the Punchers were the top ranked 1A team that competed. Overall, they finished 7th out of 22 teams and were behind six 4A and 5A schools. District opponent San Antonio Stacey was missing their top runner, but they were still over 200 points behind the Punchers. The Punchers great performance last week should keep their 7th place state ranking in class 1A and give them a boost into next weeks District competition.

All seven of the Cowgirls placed their personal best on a full length course: Lydia Bjork (15th, 12:40), Brittany Estes (20th, 12:50), Hillary Bibb (45th, 13:18), Kaitlyn Cavness (66th, 13:36), Lauren Keith (95th, 14:00), and Myles Banner (141st, 14:54). The Cowgirls finished 8th out of 22 teams, but more importantly made a huge jump to close the gap between state ranked district opponent Bracketville Brackett who finished 6th. That huge jump also placed a lot of room between the Cowgirls and San Antonio Stacy girls who finished over 200 points behind.

District will be held TODAY – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29th at Bandera City Park. High school meet begins at 2:00 and Jr. High meet begins at 3:45. Directions will be in the High School and Jr. High offices. Hope to see you there cheering on the Puncher and Cowgirls!
