AROUND THE SQUARE
Wednesday, December 3, 2008 • Posted December 3, 2008

Mason’s got a new water tower.

And you can’t miss it.

Coming in from the east on the Llano Highway.

Coming in from the northeast on the Fredonia Highway.

Coming in from Brady on Highway 87.

Just about anyway you come at it, you see it.

Shaped like a giant golf ball.

Poised on a monster tee.

Stuck on top of the hill.

From a distance it looks benign enough.

But try approaching it from the square.

Between The Commercial Bank and Nu-Way.

Head west up FM 1871.

(Aka El Paso Street.)

Look straight ahead.

You can’t miss it.

It’s looking right back at you.

The Mother Ship.

Just landed from outer space.

Surreal.

Looming over the town.

Hovering there.

Moon-white.

Top-heavy.

Any moment a hatch might pop open.

A ladder dropping to the ground.

A long, long ladder.

(Talk about gravity flow.)

Squiggly gelatinous creatures might emerge.

Down the ladder they wriggle.

Down, down, down.

To the ground.

Far, far below.

There they go.

Splunk, splunk, splunk, splunk.

Squiggling around all over town.

Kersquish, kersquish.

Like walking blobs of water.

(Don’t we wish.)

But dry on the outside.

Like our soil.

And our tanks.

And our wells.

And our roads.

And our grass.

And our skin.

And now…even my pen.

Gone dry.

That’s Mason.
