In front of a large purple crowd, the Mason Puncher 3rd and 4th grade football team took their undefeated record into Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood Saturday to face the undefeated Brownwood Lions team for the championship of the Texas Youth Football League. As time expired the score remained tied 8 to 8. Brownwood won the toss for first OT possession and had 4 opportunities from the 10 yard line to score, but the Puncher defense held tight. The ball went over to Mason and on 4th down from the two yard line, the Punchers drove it across to make the final score 14 to 8. The traveling Superbowl trophy will reside at the Mason Elementary till next fall.
Also, in a very exciting game earlier in the day, the Mason Puncher 5th and 6th grade team met up with a stout Coleman squad. The Punchers trailed going into the final minutes of the game with Coleman having possession. With a great defensive recovery, the Punchers got the ball and started to drive as the seconds counted down. On the last play of the game, the buzzer sounded as the ball was snapped, but the Punchers showed they had the heart to somehow make a touchdown and win 28 to 24 with no time left in regular play. This win gave them the 3rd place championship behind only Brownwood and the eventual champion Brady Bulldogs.
The players and coaches would like to thank everyone involved this year that helped make this season very successful. It was a community effort by all.
