Cold.

And dreary.

Snow.

Flurries.

Wind and rain.

Misty fog.

Foggy mist.

Then sun and 60.

Look out.

Another cold front coming.

Freezing temps.

Bundle up.

Wrap the plants.

Drain the pipes.

Heat the barn.

Damp and cold.

Dark and damp.

North wind blows.

Nothing to stop it but a bob-war fence.

Heave and ho.

Away we go.

Tin blows off.

Pole blows down.

Power goes off.

Then on.

Reset the clocks.

Only for the power to go off again.

Then back on.

Clocks blink in bewilderment.

Best wait awhile.

Wind snaps.

Flags flap.

Ears turn red.

Cold hands feed the fire.

Put out deer corn.

Fix the fencepost.

Close the gate.

Get the clothes off the line.

Call up the cattle.

Park the truck under cover.

And wait for it to blow over.

All this—

And it ain’t even Winter yet.

That’s Mason.
