To Mr. John C. Copeland, In response to your letter “Post Office,” I find myself needing to educate the readers as your letter is mostly inaccurate. First, the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS) are two completely separate entities. Furthermore, NAPUS is not a union.

The newspaper is a unique business. While a business, it is also charged with providing a public service to the community in which it is located. Like all businesses, we try to determine the needs of our customers, and then we figure out a way to provide the things that will meet those needs.

The Board of Directors of Operation Orphans, Inc. has selected four dates for doe hunts during the forthcoming whitetail season. They are the following Saturdays: October 25, November 15, December 6 and January 10. The October date will be an all girls’ hunt, while the remaining dates will be all boys’ hunts. This is the 55th year of the “Take a Child Hunting” program.

The Castell Area Wildlife Management Association will be meeting on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Castell, TX. Dale Schmidt of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will provide the deer harvest recommendations for this hunting season as well as an update on TPWD’s Turkey Study underway in the area.

On Monday evening, September 22, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. the English to Spanish classes will begin again. People wanting to learn or improve their English are invited to join us. Classes, which are held at the Mason County library, are free, and babysitting is provided. If you know someone who is interested, please make sure they know that all ages are eligible and everyone is welcome.

Jean Stengel, of Mason, passed away on Friday, September 12, at the age of 91. Mrs. Stengel is survived by her son Leo Stengel and wife Jean of Tempe Arizona, and a granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Stengel of Lexington, Kentucky. She is also survived by her niece and nephews Ann Grote and family, Bob Brandenberger and family and Andy Brandenberger and family.

Curtis Kuhlmann, of Mason, passed away on Friday, September 5, at the age of 85. He was born in Fredericksburg on December 4, 1928 to Harry and Wanda Burrer Kuhlmann. After graduating from high school in Fredericksburg, Curtis served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1949. After leaving the Navy, Curtis married Annabel Loth and had three children.
