For quite some time now, some friends and I have been trying to plan a float trip down the Llano River. Unfortunately, the river hasn't been cooperating. Due to the drought conditions of the last few years, the Llano River has continued to flow, just not enough to make for a float trip that didn't require portaging for much of the trip.

The 1st Annual JP Murray, Sr WSPBR Memorial Bull Riding was held at Ft. Mason Park April 4, 2015. Over 300 people came out to support the cause and watch 33 bull riders from 35 to 65 years old compete for the $1500 Added Money and beautiful first place buckles.

Physicals will be administered on May 27th (Wednesday) in the high school gym at 3:30 p.m. All incoming 7th, 9th, and 11th grade girls and boys must have an updated physical to participate in athletics next year and can get it done at this time. Cost of the physical is $15.

May 8th is the day we celebrate victory over Europe during World War II. VFW Post 8554 Mason will hold a ceremony on the 12th of May to honor this date in our history. Ceremony will begin at 1;15 at the post on Post Hill St. All interested parties are invited to attend.

Carol Tucker will be teaching a Microsoft Word 2010 class at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library in June. The class is held one night each week for four consecutive weeks. The class is free, but class size is limited. Please call 325-347-5446 to register.

Dateline: May, 2, 2015; Comanche Creek Golf Course The day dawned bright and clear, with a light southwest wind blowing steadily. By mid-morning, the golf course started to awaken. The greens mowing machine coughed into life and the final manicuring of the putting surfaces began. Contestants started to arrive; teams were built, practice putts were made; a lot of golf stories were told around the club house.

Ruby R. (Floyd) Keith, 85, of Brady and formerly of Mason, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015, in Brady. Services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Heritage Funeral Home in Brady with burial following in Rest Haven Cemetery. Visitation with the family was held from 1:00 P.M.-2:00 P.

Ray Starks, formerly of Mason and Kerrville, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, at the age of 72. Mr. Starks is survived by two sisters Jeannine Ketchum and husband James of Burnet and Shirley Ross of Comfort. Ray had lived in Kerrville since the 1960s and for many years, Ray owned and operated Head Masters Beauty Salon in Kerrville. Ray was born and raised in Mason and was a graduate of Mason High School.

Cooper Ray Burnett, infant son of Robert and Lisa (Click) Burnett passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Cooper Ray was born three months early, on October 31, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals. He was loving and compassionately cared for over the last six months by the nurses and doctors of the UIHC NICU. Issibell Barker, age 92 of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully at the hospital on April 29, 2015, while being checked for heart problems. She was the daughter of Louis John Storch and Marguerite Storch, born in Fredricksburg on April 26, 1923. She was married to Robert M. Barker Jr. in Mason in June 1946 and had a daughter Joan Wainscott and son Robert M.

Lois LaVerne Jordan Koock went to her heavenly home to Jesus’s arms, surrounded by family and friends, on May 2nd, 2015, at the age of 83, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Funeral Services will be held in Mason, Texas at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, May 6th, 2015, at 1:00 p.m.

The annual Habitat for Humanity Spring Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 16 at the historic Homer Martin Ranch on the banks of the Llano River. This year’s benefit is shaping up to be one of the best ones ever. Highlighting the event will the entertainment by renowned jazz musician Johnny Nicholas and his band.

Mason boys' track team continued their great season at the regional track meet held in Kingsville this past weekend. The boys competed very well and ended up as the team champions for the first time in school history. Those finishing in the top two at regionals will be advancing to the state meet.

What a fun and amazing golf season we enjoyed this year. Arriving in Austin last week, we were not a hundred percent sure what to expect but we knew we had our work cut out for us. Tuesday we played a practice round in high cold winds. It looked like rain but not a drop.
