The officialGreat Castell Kayak Race is always the first weekend in June. The race, founded by Jeri Alice Arsenault, has always been a fund raiser for local and regional charity. The race course is a 12 mile journey downstream from the Highway 87 river bridge over the Llano.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will inspect commercial vehicles throughout the state during Roadcheck 2008, a 72-hour intensive inspection program that runs from June 3 through 5 throughout North America. DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement troopers and noncommissioned inspectors, along with Highway Patrol troopers who have received specialized training in commercial vehicle inspection, will stop thousands of commercial vehicles to inspect safety equipment and check driver log books, driver licenses and endorsements.

On June 6, 1944, one of the largest maritime invasions in history took place on the shores of Normandy, France. On this day, 160,000 Western Allied forces came ashore in a massive effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation in World War II. General Dwight D.

The Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce and the Heart of Texas Country Music Association, along with title sponsors Brady National Bank and Lubke’s Chevrolet are pleased to announce the highly anticipated musical entertainment line-up for the 2008 Brady Lake Music Fest scheduled for June 6th, 7th and 8th, in Brady, Texas. This new event will encompass numerous musical acts from multiple country music genres - Traditional Country, New Country, Texas Country, and Tejano - that will appeal to a wide variety of local and regional music lovers.

If you don’t have items to donate and like to bake, you can help by offering baked goods, which are also wanted.

City of Mason employees were unable to read the utility meters at the usual time during the month of May. As a result, some additional days of usage will be reflected on your June utility bill, which will likely cause that bill to be somewhat higher than usual.

Our Mason High School Students Competed in 4 more State UIL events this Monday, May 26th, at Texas State University in San Marcos. They brought home one gold and three silver medals.

Beth Schulte-Harder and Gerald Harder of Dimmitt announce the engagement of their daughter, Lori Schulte, to Joe David Lehmberg. The bride-elect is also the daughter of late Lester Schulte. Grandparents of the bride-elect are Dora Pohlmeier of Amarillo, and the late Philip Pohlmeier and the late Clarence and Odelia Schulte of Nazareth.

Ryne Kahan, a 2004 graduate of Mason High School, graduated from Christian University on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Ryne graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4. 0 grade point average from the Honors Program with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies with a major emphasis in political science and history.

Lawrence Floyd (L. F. ) Benton died May 25, 2008, at the age of 92 at Mason Care Center in Mason, TX.

Editorials

At the outset, and even above in the title, I'll admit that I'm too old to be doing these things. However, I do them, and so I guess I may as well just accept that I'm either having a mid-life crisis, or I just haven't accepted that some things belong to the young.

Editor: A long-running blight on Mason’s good name came to an end this week as 27 starving horses, many of them pregnant mares, were confiscated by Mason’s Sheriff’s department and the city’s Animal Control Officer.

Art United Methodist Church has collected the best recipes from members, family, and friends and compiled them into an attractive keepsake cookbook. They will begin selling their one-of-a-kind cookbooks on June 2, 2008 for $18.

Briton Rueffer recently graduated from TSTC in Waco. He earned a degree in Architectural Drafting and Design.

The 2008 Lamplight Designs Art Competition Winners:

12 year old Saabrina Rumbaugh, daugher of Sgt and Mrs Michael Ray Rumbaugh stationed at Ft. Benning GA, has won her first golf tournament and is a member of the National Honor Society. Sabrina is the grandaughter of Mike and Donella Rumbaugh of Georgetown and great grandaughter of Dean Rumbaugh of Mason.

I was taking pictures at the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve the other night when my camera ran out of battery power. I reached into the pocket of my camera case and pulled out a little plastic covered battery pack. As I was removing the plastic I noticed the word “Energizer” written on it.

We should have seen the trend sprouting when personalized license plates came along.

Summer is here. It is hot and dry. Let’s get serious about praying for rain.

Are “Clocks” really necessary? Time seems to be more important these days than family. There is a clock everywhere you look.
