Members of the American Legion Fort Mason Post 285 Ladies Auxiliary will be distributing memorial poppies on Friday, Nov. 7th and Saturday, Nov. 8th, in observance of Veterans Day. Poppies will also be available at area businesses and at the Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11th. According to Unit Poppy Chairman, Mrs.

TJ Schmidt was named Regional Volunteer of the year in 2007 for Region 9 of the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards. This area extends from Midland to Mason and is one of the largest regions for the state of Texas. Every county board had the oppurtunity to nominate a person that has gone that extra mile in helping the youth in the county.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, October 28th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 42 members and 3 visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were 2 Mason High School Seniors, Zac Nash and Stephen Marquez. Lion Lee Graham was responsible for the program and introduced Coach Jeff Guice, the Cowgirls Basketball Coach who spoke about the upcoming girls basketball season.

The Alamo District of Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs held the annual Fall Board Meeting in Refugio on October 24 and 25. Representatives from clubs in Cotulla, Lytle, Pleasanton, Port Lavaca, Refugio, San Antonio, Victoria, and Mason attended. Two clubs in the district did not send representatives. They were Beeville and Rock Springs.

On Tuesday, October 28th, the Riata Service Organization met at the home of Tess Geistweidt, with Bobby Frazier serving as co-hostess. Twenty seven members were present. Pat Tucker, Vice President, welcomed and introduced Bill Price and Buster Nixon who are candidates for the Sheriff/Tax Assessor-Collector. Each candidate spoke of his experience, qualifications and plans for running the office if elected.

Mason’s Wild Game Dinner is this Saturday, November 8th at 6:00 pm at the City Park Community Building. Alpha Beta Psi will be setting up a table outside of The Geistweidt and Whitworth Law office on Friday November 7, for their annual Krispy Kreme Coffee and Donut Fund Raiser. The donut and coffee orders may be picked up starting at 8 a.m. until noon. If there are remaining donuts and coffee, the sorority will set up a table on Saturday the 8th of November as well for those who did not get to pre-purchase donuts and coffee.

On October 29th, several members of The Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country enjoyed a personal visit and gallery tour with Mason’s own resident artist, Kyle L. Martin. Kyle described how he came to create his studio in Mason, how the Warehouse Gallery has come into existence, his work that is on display there, plus, information regarding the visiting Middle of Somewhere exhibit that is open until the end of December.

Two highway signs were erected October 24 direct tourist to the Mason County Museum. Visitors have had problems for a long time finding the Museum or knowing of its existence. Located off the square, information needed to be made known. Study by the Mason County Museum Committee cumulated into the plan to place signs to promote the Museum.

Oma Faye Merz passed away Saturday, November 1st, at the age of 82. Nell Barsch Kidd, a longtime Snyder resident, died Tuesday, October 2, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside service for Mrs. Kidd, 77, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Bethel Cemetery in Katemcy, Texas with Jim Hill, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. The Junction Eagles made the trip over on Thursday night to play against the Punchers in the last district contest for the year. The Punchers proved a formidable adversary as they closed out district competition with a 42-6 victory. The Punchers were obviously very focused and geared up to play their rivals, and executed efficiently in every facet of the game.

Last week, the cross country teams traveled to Bandera for their District 30A Cross Country Meet. Since Mason just dropped from 2A to 1A, we were one of the new teams in the district. By changing districts, we also changed from Region I to Region IV, so we would be competing against teams that we had not run against in the past four years.

By defeating the Eagles of Junction last week, our Punchers secured a berth in the State Playoffs and put themselves in a position to capture the District 29 Championship. The Punchers' title hopes will hinge on the Junction vs Menard game Friday night. If Junction defeats Menard we will win the District outright.

For the past week the roads have been clogged with pickups and trailers loaded down with four-wheelers and other hunting paraphernalia. The restaurants were full of people wearing camouflage clothes this past weekend, and there were actually lines of vehicles, a few times, at local gas pumps. The unmistakable signs of fall in the Texas Hill Country are upon us. My wife and I went out to eat Saturday night, and sat at a table adjacent to a group of men and boys wearing camo.
