Editorials

I've written variations of this column after every major election; but, thought it wouldn't hurt to trot out the ideas for another turn in the sunlight. What, you may ask, is it to which I'm referring? Election results! This morning, your candidates either won or lost. If they won, you are hungover from the euphoria of having seen your favorite be confirmed by the electorate.

Sports

On paper, Junction was supposed to beat Mason. The sportswriters, soothsayers of the pigskin realm, had all picked the Eagles to upset Mason's march to the playoffs. Instead, the Punchers downed Junction 20-7 last Friday night, throwing a considerable monkey wrench into the district standings, and providing a night of great football to the fans that made the short journey out west. Mason took the kickoff from Junction to start the game, and for the next four minutes of play, they controlled th ...
The Junction Eagles made the trip over on Thursday night to play against the Punchers in the last district contest for the year. The Punchers proved a formidable adversary as they closed out district competition with a 42-6 victory. The Punchers were obviously very focused and geared up to play their rivals, and executed efficiently in every facet of the game.
Last week, the cross country teams traveled to Bandera for their District 30A Cross Country Meet. Since Mason just dropped from 2A to 1A, we were one of the new teams in the district. By changing districts, we also changed from Region I to Region IV, so we would be competing against teams that we had not run against in the past four years.
By defeating the Eagles of Junction last week, our Punchers secured a berth in the State Playoffs and put themselves in a position to capture the District 29 Championship. The Punchers' title hopes will hinge on the Junction vs Menard game Friday night. If Junction defeats Menard we will win the District outright.

Milestones

Dear Gerry, I would first like to offer my congratulations to Coach Keller and the Mason boys and girls cross country teams for their outstanding performances at last week’s district meet. Both squads dominated the competition on an individual and team basis. I’ve had the privilege of helping out a little bit with the team and I couldn’t be prouder of this group of young men and women. Secondly, I’d like to encourage the fine citizens of Mason to come out and support the teams at this ...

Columnists

For the past week the roads have been clogged with pickups and trailers loaded down with four-wheelers and other hunting paraphernalia. The restaurants were full of people wearing camouflage clothes this past weekend, and there were actually lines of vehicles, a few times, at local gas pumps. The unmistakable signs of fall in the Texas Hill Country are upon us. My wife and I went out to eat Saturday night, and sat at a table adjacent to a group of men and boys wearing camo.
Jenetics or genetics (this is a ‘j’ week) have lots to do with who we are and what our health is like, particularly as we age. We tend to put up with arthritis, high blood pressure, a little weight around the middle, etc. because we see them as symptoms of age as determined by our genes. Scientists are discovering more and more about our genetic makeup – and more importantly, how to control it, or at least limit the worst aspects of it as it applies to our health.
When You Are Engulfed In Flames By David Sedaris Published by Little, Brown (2008) $25.99 Hardback I’m a little late when it comes to David Sedaris. We’ve carried all of his books at our store at one time or another but I didn’t read one until Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim came out in 2004.
Love. A four-letter word. In English, that is. And a good four-letter word at that. According to trusty Webster, it came out of Old English lufu. And Gothic lubo. Call it what you will. For centuries we have been trying to describe it. To capture it in sonnet and song. Poems and plays. Novels and movies. Yet Love remains elusive. Impossible to explain. Sometimes hard to find. Or hard to hold on to. Love can come and go. Or just grow and grow and grow. Show your love with flower ...
We have a possibility of 20% rain on Tuesday and then some cool weather on Thursday. Enjoy these beautiful Fall days and the absence of the political ads. The next birthday on my list is the celebration of Traci Leigh Jordan on November 12th. Have a great day Traci. Keep Anna Grace Durst in your prayers.
Do you have trouble getting dinner finished on time? Maybe you just feel that it’s all just too much trouble so you stop by the fast food restaurant and pick up dinner on your way home. Fixing quick and nutritious meals doesn’t have to be a chore. Here are seven ways to make meal planning easier: 1.
Rarely have I heard Uncle Mort so excited. I’m used to my 96-year-old kin from the thicket calling with news from his faraway world where country road lifestyles have changed but little across the years. I thought he’d give me the rundown of “thicket thinking” on the presidential race, but as usual, I was 180 degrees off course. Behold and lo, he was on a technology kick this time.
“Observations,” is what I experienced this past weekend. The old saying,”Go West Young Man, Go West,” is really true. I was traveling East. Had to go see my new grand-puppies. I really needed a dose of “Puppy Breath!” I pull over for fast traffic, and not one going Eastward, gave a sign of gratitude.
Mostly Memories
The following is a narrative written some 65 years after the summer of 1930: ........... ****** I awoke this morning in the same spot where most of my visions of the past seem to germinate and as usual there was a song running through my head. This morning the song was “drinking coffee from an old tin can while riding out on the range” and shucks, I haven’t been on a horse or ridden the range since the summers of 29 and 30. During those summers my oldest brother Bob McGrew (who was my ...
The Practical Baker
I want to start off by telling everyone that I haven’t the slightest idea why this is called Real Spanish Bread. In the recipe, it is stated that it comes from a panadero or panaderia, which is Spanish for bakery, but looking at the ingredients, I think it could be called Real Italian Bread, Real American Bread, or Real German Bread and no one would know the difference!
