As a teenager growing up in Central Texas during the 1970s, I had two basic ways to earn money. One way was to work, which is always the first choice a high school boy will make, provided the only alternative is to begin selling body parts. There are plenty of jobs for a kid in a small town, but most of them are somewhat unpleasant, since it’s rare to find someone who wants to hire a teenaged boy to take his daughter to a movie, or test drive a new Corvette.

Nonnie’s Kitchen will host a cooking demonstration at the Mason County Library on Friday, March 20 from 12 to 1:30 in the Stribbling room. This session will consist of French chicken, Italian cheesy polenta and Mexican green apple salad. We will conclude with a very famous English dessert called Eton Mess.

The Heart of Texas Country Music Association’s 26th Anniversary Celebration gets kicked off on Friday, March 20, with the Welcome Party and Dance. The entertainment by Billy Mata and Texas Tradition with Darrell McCall, Curtis Potter and Tony Booth will begin at 8:00 PM at the Brady Civic Center in Brady.

This is a reminder to all land owners, the annual Livestock and Wildlife Protection Association membership dues are due by April 1! The Association greatly appreciates its members who support this local nonprofit volunteer organization. Your support provides the necessary resources to control the coyote predator population in Mason County.

The Mason HS Puncher Band went to UIL Contest and Sight Reading Contest in Coleman on March 6th and came away with a 1st division in Concert and a 1st division in Sight Reading. That, combined with the 1st division the band received in marching contest back in October, combines to give the band what is called “Sweepstakes.” “The band did a great job performing on stage Friday,” director Bobby Halamicek said, “It was a hectic week with the bad weather.

The Mason County Ministerial Alliance announces their Lenten lunch schedule as follow: March 18th hosted at St. Joseph’s Catholic; March 25th with meal provided by Hilda United Methodist/hosted at St. Paul Lutheran Church. There will be no lunch during Holy Week. All are welcome to join for food, fellowship, and devotion from 12:00 to 1:00.

The Hilda Community Club will hold its annual spring highway clean-up this Friday, March 20 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Stop by the clubhouse to pick up a vest and trash bag. We clean RR 783 from the clubhouse north to Hwy. 87. We need all the help we can get – our members are getting’ pretty darn old!! Supper will be served around 6:30 so even if you can’t help with the clean-up, show up for supper.

The Mason Tennis Association’s 14th annual Tennis-A-Thon will take place this Sunday, March 22nd, at the Mason Tennis Center. The funds raised will be used to improve and maintain our tennis center. The tennis playing youth of our community are taking part in this event by participating in tennis drills, games and competitions for 1 and 1/2 hours, and by obtaining sponsors who pledge money for each participant.

The Texas Independence Celebration Luncheon held recently by local Heart of Texas Chapter was a SOLD OUT success. Costumed members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) served appetizers and a meal featuring recipes from the era when Texas was a Republic (1836-1846). Guest Speaker Donaly Brice chronicled the life and times of Susanna Dickenson, the only Anglo survivor of the Battle of the Alamo and Fletcher Clark added spirited entertainment with his music.

Mason’s Habitat for Humanity Affiliate has developed quite a reputation. It seems that HFH volunteers are clamoring to get to Mason, because they love the community of Mason and they know that Mason is one of the best places to learn the technology, skills, techniques and language of high-performance and green building .

I find it hard to visualize Spring Break when it isn’t Spring yet! Spring is on the 20th of March! Too, students want to go snow skiing on Spring break. With the icy weather we’ve been having, I’d pick a warmer spot. There was no Spring break in my day and time.
