Superintendent Pam Kruse has notified the News that Friday night's graduation ceremony has been moved from Puncher Stadium to the High School gymnasium at 8:00 p.m. The change in venue is necessary due to the amount of rain already received, and the forecast for further rainfall and storms on Thursday and Friday.

The Golf Tournament has been canceled due to rain. It will be rescheduled at a later date. The Mason Puncher Club is holding its 13th Annual Golf Tournament Saturday, May 16th at the Mason Golf Course. The tournament will be a 4 person 18 hole scramble with 1 mulligan and bonus string.

Every year the First Grade class hosts a Reader’s Café in February. The Reader’s Café is a restaurant style atmosphere where parents and community members get to come and listen to first grade students read their books. There are menus with students’ names and book selections printed where the attendees can choose a student to read to them.

On Saturday, June 6, the Mason 4H Archery Club will host its first annual Fun Shoot Fundraiser at the historic Premier Ranch. Registration will open at 8AM and close at 12PM. All participants who pre-register before Monday, June 1 will receive a free T-shirt. The entry fee is $20 for youth and $30 for adults.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, the Mason Garden Club met in the Stribling Room of the Mason County Library. Prior to the meeting, a salad luncheon, with members bringing their favorite salad, was enjoyed by the members. Laura Hansen, assisted by Rose Stein, presented an interesting program “ Wildflowers and Trees of Mason County.” There were nineteen members attending.

On Friday evening, the seniors of Mason High School will have their graduation ceremony. They are the 126th graduating class from Mason County. I've been covering the graduation proceedings for 15 years. Each class is special to me in very different ways. I've watched my own family members graduate, then I've watched the children of friends as they walked across the grass at Puncher Stadium to receive their diplomas.

Ashley McLaughlin of Mason, received the scholarship given each year to a graduating senior in one of the four counties (Mason, Menard, Kimble, and McCulloch) served by the Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country. Seniors in each of these counties may apply for a scholarship. Their talent could be in the area of drama, graphic arts, music, or writing.

FREDERICKSBURG, TX__Oktoberfest, the family-oriented German event that takes place in the center of Fredericksburg, is poised to again attract 1,200 volunteers and 20,000 visitors in its 35th year. As a result, the oom-pah-pah echo of 34 previous years will carry over in the hearts and minds of people who have made the event an annual tradition, many who traversed hundreds of miles to attend.

In the Texas Hill Country, Mason I.S.D. has successfully spearheaded the first ever high school viticulture program in the state of Texas. Mason I.S.D. Ag Science teacher, Lance Rasch, will instruct the course in collaboration with Texas A&M University’s Dr. Justin Scheiner, who will help write the curriculum. Dan McLaughlin, local viticulturist and proprietor of Robert Clay Vineyards, proposed the idea to Mason I.S.D.

The Ramon Family Foundation is proud to announce the 2015 recipients of the Gilberto Ramon Memorial Scholarship Program. This year, the Foundation awarded 10 each $1000 scholarships to deserving Mason High School graduating seniors. The Hill Country Astronomers (HCA) will meet at 6:30 PM, Monday, June 1, in the HEB meeting room at the Hill Country University Center in Fredericksburg. Ryan Behrends, club member and president-elect, will present a program entitled “Observing the Moon 101” related to the Astronomical League’s (AL) lunar observing programs.

LAWRENCE — The names of nearly 4,550 candidates for degree from the University of Kansas this spring — representing 87 Kansas counties, 46 other states and 43 other countries — have been announced by the University Registrar.
