The Junior High 7th/8th grade boy athletes and their parents are invited to a brief meeting with Coach Searsy Wednesday August 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the Junior High gym. Schedules, locker assignments, and equipment will be handed out and parents can discuss the up-coming athletic year. Athletes are reminded to report Monday August 23rd with the appropriate hair cut and dress.

The Dr Pepper Open Tennis Tournament waited for the hottest weekend of the year to kick-off, but the weather couldn’t deter the great matches that was played at the Helen Tallent Tennis Center and county courts. The annual event that has attracted players from all over the United States was featured in a Sports Illustrated article in 1976. At that time, the Dr Pepper Open was the 3rd largest tournament in the state of Texas with over 1000 entries.

Mason's Summer Tennis Camp has been going strong, preparing the next generation of champions. This is the beginner group, ages 4 through 8 years who attended the first week of the camp. Susan Grote is the instructor, and she shared this great picture.

For Mason Puncher Baseball Fans this year has been an amazing ride. Unfortunately, it came to an abrupt end Friday night in Bandera. The La Pryor Bulldogs were a tough opponent. Their Junior pitcher had the Puncher bats all but nonexistent through the first 3 innings of play. In the third inning, La Pryor was able to put 2 runs across the plate.

Tomas Callejas was the lone Puncher to compete at the State Track Meet in Austin on May 14. He competed in both the 3200M and the 1600M events. He ran well in both races and set a new school record in the process, finishing with a time of 10:07 in the 3200M.
Jeffery Williams lead the Purple team to a first place victory at the San Saba Invitational Golf Tournament last week. J’ Angelo Martinez lead the White team to a third place finish just a few shots out of second place. When I returned home from Saturday afternoons MHS Puncher baseball playoff game, I was besieged by E-mails and phone messages, all with the same question. Did we win? My response to all was a resounding YES. ( See Melody Trip's article for details). It has been ten long years since the MHS baseball program has seen this kind of success.
Would it ever have crossed Steve Latham’s mind back in 1935 that Mason would have added 70 more state championships to his initial singles title? That is exactly what occurred in Austin last Tuesday as Mason added four more titles to up its record number to 71. Mason took 10 players (more than any other school in Texas) to Austin last week to compete in the 100th year of UIL competition.
