I have always heard the old saying that “if you do a thing as many as thirteen times it will become a habit.” I have also heard that “you can get used to anything” and I firmly believe that each of these oldies is true. Listen then to the following story about those statements and become convinced that they are true. ********* Back during World War II we were renting a house in the southern part of San Antonio where the rent had been frozen at $35 a month and the water bill was $1.00 per month no matter how much water you used.

During the past few months I have received cards, letters, and emails from readers who believe my stance concerning the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is extreme. These messages have all been polite and sensible, and have come from people who are obviously not the ‘granola’ types found in some parts of the country.

How Often Should You Change Your Dishrag? You should probably change your dishrag more often than you think. Bacteria can come from wiping soiled kitchen surfaces, touching raw meat and then touching your dishrag, and so on. Bacteria are then spread all over your kitchen when that same dishrag is used to clean counters, the kitchen table, and the top of the stove.

Continue to pray for rain. Monday’s forecast has a 40% chance for rain but the sun is shining brightly. We need a major change in the weather patterns to bring some good rains to West Texas. Pray to God for the rain we so desperately need. Lisa and I had a great visit with Florence Blake and her daughter Brenda, son-in-law Mark and granddaughter Emily last week.

Sign. A four-letter word. But a good one. A sign can be so many things. Sign of the times. Stop sign. Sign on the dotted line. Sign language. Sign up and join. Sign of the zodiac. Hey man, like what’s your sign? If we were learning to speak English we might say “siggin.” Or “seye-gn.” How we got to “sign” is a mystery to me. Seeing as how the word comes from the Latin signum. Maybe signum got silenced as it wandered through Old French. By the time it reached Middle English, the word was signe. Sign. Sign of approval. Sign away your rights. Sign of the cross. It must be a sign. Patricia Beaty makes signs. So does Mason Monograms. The political campaign raised lots of signs. Obama Biden. McCain Palin. All over town. Buster Nixon. Bill Price. All over the countryside. Signs everywhere. Obama on one corner. McCain on the other. Now the election is over. The deed is done. The United States elected Obama as its 44th President. Some believe it’s a good sign. Others fear it’s a bad sign. Sign or no sign, one thing is united here. Neither party has taken down their signs. Obama still on one corner. McCain still on the other. Maybe by Christmas they’ll be gone. Signing off for now. That’s Mason. Renee Walker is an author, poet, and real estate broker on the square.

THE IDLE AMERICAN

Let’s “fess” up! Who among us has not attended memorial services that stretched toward eternity? Given advance warning of lengthy services, we might opt to be absent. Or to concoct an exit strategy triggered by a coughing spell. A tribute recently held in Fort Worth was to memorial services what Lawrence of Arabia was to movies: long, but worth every second… * * * * * The tribute was to Kyle Ogle of Texas, a real-life hero to the thousand-plus mourners who crowded into McKinney Memorial Bible Church to honor the life of this 38-year-old hero.

Every once in a while I have a “Lucy” moment. Z. has a father and son hunter team and both go by the name of Hugh. This was conflicting, especially when both were there together talking to you. So, Z. renamed them Hugh 1 and Hugh 2. This has worked for more than five years until last weekend.

For $20.00 you can help the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library replace a worn Junior classic book. The book can be ordered in honor or memory of someone and will make an excellent Christmas gift. A list of possible books is at the front desk of the library.

Mostly Memories

FOREWORD: For those of you too young to know anything about Will Rogers I suggest you go to the internet and ask Google about this man who in the 1920’s and 30’s was a cowboy, a movie star ,a columnist, a humorist and a philosopher who was killed in an airplane crash in 1935.

Nucleotides are a somewhat new product. They are the building blocks for DNA and RNA - the nucleic acids that are found in every cell of the body. Nucleotides can promote an instantaneous boost in both immunity and energy. They are credited with helping our bodies repair themselves, creating new tissue, maintaining a strong immune system and conducting many other important functions.
