Dale Watson, Austin’s king of country music, will bring his Lone Stars band and hardcore country music to Mason Saturday March 21. So, if you’re yearnin’ for some good ol’ real country music, then the Odeon Theater in Mason is the place to be. Show time is 7:00 PM and tickets are $20 per person. Dale Watson grew up listening to the likes of Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams and Buck Owens and his musical roots and values remain steadfast to real country music.

Several scholarship opportunities are available for both high school and college students who are part of a Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) member family, Mason County Farm Bureau President Tim Dockal said. “Texas Farm Bureau offers these scholarships to help the next generation as they continue their education,” President Dockal said.

The Mason Garden Club met Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at the Stribling Room of the Mason County Library. The program was given by Gretchen Lang Qualls of Mason on “Old Time Gardening” in the 1800’s in Mason County. It covered the early plants, insect control, seeds and seed collection of our Mason ancestors.

The Mason Study Club held its monthly meeting on January 28 in the Stribling Room at the library. Providing a salad luncheon were hostesses Jan McCann, Phyllis Estill, Mary Polk, Mary Freytag, and Trudy Irwin, chairman. Following lunch was our special guest speaker, Kay Evans, sharing with us her recent adventures in Africa.

The 2015 Mason Tennis Team has been hard at work since school resumed in January preparing for the 2015 team and individual seasons. Both Varsity and JV teams have already participated in tournaments and are showing improvement by the week. Mason is going into the season with the task of replacing ten graduating seniors including six that were state champions or runners-up.

The Texas A&M AgriLIfe Extension Service will conduct a Multi-County Wildlife Program and Tour on April 9, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Murchison/Whitehead Memorial Youth Complex, Menard, TX. The complex is located on Highway 29/190 west going from Menard to Eldorado. If you are coming in from the Llano area you can travel 29 all the way.

On The Teaching of History There’s a riot quietly ongoing around something called “Advanced Placement History”. Folks on the Right want to revisit what is taught in schools about Our History. This seems to involve a lot of Revision, and Omission of many things that really happened that they, for whatever reason, find uncomfortable.

We've had a cold winter this year. We've had very light snow, small amounts of ice, and several days that barely creeped above the freezing mark all day long. Yesterday, for the first time in quite a while, we even had a "snow day," and the kids stayed home from school. Texas winters, especially here on the north end of the Hill Country, can be very unpredictable.

The Mason County Commissioners Court has appointed Mitzi Drennan to the Library Board of the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Library Board President Margaret Persky welcomed Mitzi Drennan to her first meeting on February 17. As an at-large member, Mitzi will serve for three years.

The voice of Mason County is being heard in Austin thanks to farmers and ranchers. “Every time the legislature is in session farmers and ranchers visit the capitol to speak with our lawmakers about the issues most important to our area,” Tim Dockal, Mason County Farm Bureau president, said. “We do this to ensure the voice of Mason County is heard and represented.” The trip to the capitol was part of Texas Farm Bureau’s annual Leadership Conference.
