Jimma Gray Byrd will present Becoming a Better Birder, a special program on bird watching, at 2:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room of the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library on Wednesday, July 30. Ms. Byrd is a member of Texas Ornithological Society, a Texas Master Naturalist, and a Master Gardener.

Our show this year is called “Who is your favorite superhero?” You can find a copy of the schedule on the Mason HS Website Band page. Also the students should have received an email at their school email address that has dates for the summer band schedule as well as the entire year’s schedule.

The Heart of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) has been busy this summer. Most Chapters take a break during the summer months, but the local Chapter has had several major projects on its calendar. Just for fun, the Chapter participated in the Independence Day Parades in Brady and Mason for the sixth straight year.

A benefit roping to raise money for the Masonic Lodge Scholarship Fund (Masonic Lodge # 273) is planned for August 1, 2014. Books open at 6:00 p.m., roping starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Fort Mason Park Rodeo Arena. Any questions should be directed to Justin Yonker at 325-347-4844.

The Long Mountain Improvement Corporation (Cemetery) will hold their annual meeting Saturday, July 26 at 10 AM at the Long Mt. Community Center. All members are encouraged to attend as well as those who are interested in the cemetery. Officers are to be elected as well as directors for the coming year and other business is to be discussed.

Once again Mason lured hundreds of top tennis players to town as the Dr Pepper/Babolat Open was played last weekend. The tournament started on Thursday with a four hour rain delay. That delay didn’t dampen the spirits of the 600 entries what-so-ever. The tournament is hosted each year by the Mason Tennis Association and is sponsored by the Mason Bottling Company and Babolat.

VBS will be held Monday-Thursday, July 28-31st from 8:30 a.m.- noon and is hosted by St. Paul, First United Methodist Church, and Art United Methodist Church. Recently, I did some research on a bunch of the early explorers, such as Columbo, Vasco de Vasco, Ponch de le Own, and others. Well, not exactly research, per se. What I actually did was rearrange some paper clips into ship configurations on my desk and wore an eye patch for a while.
