The Library Book Club will be reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr for its September selection. The book is available at the library in print and eBook formats. The club will meet at 5:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room of the library on Tuesday, September 29 to discuss the book.

The Hill Country Astronomers (HCA) will meet at 6:30 PM, Monday, September 7, at the Hill Country University Center, 2818 East US Hwy 290 in Fredericksburg. Kim Arvidsson, Ph.D., will talk about stellar evolution – the lives of stars from their enshrouded births to their spectacular deaths. Dr. Arvidsson has been an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Schreiner University in Kerrville since 2013.

Cherokee Home for Children is having its annual benefit auction on Saturday, September 26th, with bidding beginning at 9:00 a.m. Cherokee Home is located 2 miles north of Cherokee Texas on Hwy 16. Donated items for sale include furniture, antiques, collectibles, appliances, automobiles, tools, saddles, and much more. All proceeds of the sale go to the care of the children at Cherokee Home.

This Monday, Mason I.S.D’s viticulture class made their first trip to a vineyard for an experience in the field. The 19 high school students were brought to Robert Clay Vineyard, owned by local viticulturist Dan McLaughlin, where they were shown the 12-acre site and given their first experience of a small but important aspect of viticulture. A fire that burned through northeast Mason County last week ended up consuming 9000+ acres before finally being brought under control early Sunday morning. The fire began with a woodpecker and a transformer near Eaton Cemetery Road. The Mason Volunteer Fire Department soon was joined by fire crews from all the neighboring communities and counties, as well as the Mason County Road Department and the Texas Forest Service. Filling Puncher Paks at the Senior Center on Thursday were (left to right) Oleta Kuhlmann, Jerry Wright, Mario Arteaga, Dena Davis, Barry Kilgore and others. Puncher Paks are part of the Mason ISD program to provide food for children who may not have access to meals over the weekend.

The staff of Mason Clinic held a reception last Thursday with a dual purpose. They were saying goodbye to long-serving physician Dr. David Hoerster, and welcoming their new physician, Dr. Monte Horn. The arrival of Dr. Horn marks the first time in years that the Mason Clinic has had a physician on staff who was also a resident of Mason.

The first regular game of the 2015 season saw the Mason Punchers welcome the Ozona Lions to the Puncherdome last Friday night. The Ozona team has been going through a rebuilding process; and, on Friday night, they still weren't able to pull together enough resistance to stop the Punchers. The Mason team has a lot of new personnel in key positions; and, a large contingent of senior players.

The Punchers welcomed Blanco to town last Thursday for their final scrimmage of the 2015 season. This Friday night, the Punchers will welcome the Ozona Lions to Puncher Stadium for the first pre-conference game of the season. The JV White and JV Purple teams will both be playing out of town on Thursday night.

The issue of Cecil the Lion came up again in a conversation a few days ago. Although I had not planned to revisit this story, at least until something really relevant happened, this recent discussion has caused me to rethink the whole thing. For me, thinking hard about something once is a rarity in itself.

West Central Wireless recently gave over $30,000 to Athletic and Band Booster Clubs throughout West Central Texas. Missi Davis of West Central Wireless presented an $80 check to Mason ISD Booster Club, Pam Kruse.
