On October 27, a young man by the name of Brian Wright sent me some photos and a short article about a remarkable situation. He explained how J. R. Nicholson's dog, Buddy, had ridden on the back step of an ambulance during a call to bring his owner to medical assistance. I check on the validity of the story, verified that it had actually occurred, and included it in our October 29 edition as "Buddy the Wonder Dog."

BRADY – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the Tri-County Land and Livestock Conference on Dec. 3 at the Heart of Texas Event Center, 804 San Angelo Highway, Brady. The program, to be conducted by the AgriLife Extension offices in Concho, McCulloch, and Menard counties, will start with registration at 8 a.m.

Operation Orphans, Inc. hosted 53 boys during the second hunt of the “Take a Child Hunting” program Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15. The young hunters harvested 80 animals which included 50 whitetail does, 3 spikes, 19 management bucks, 1 aoudad, 3 axis and 4 feral hogs. Tim Osburn will return to the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library on November 26, 10:00 A.M. -12:00 noon in the Stribling Room to give a Medicare educational program and to answer questions. Mr. Osburn is an expert in Medicare, and the program is designed to assist Medicare and Medicaid recipients on how to choose, change, and enroll in 2015 Medicare Health Plans and/or Prescription Drug Plans.

The November 4 general election in Mason County had 1377 votes cast, with 767 of those occurring during the two week early voting period. Mason County voters followed the trends statewide with their ballots, heavily favoring Republican candidates in all races. The City of Mason will be closed Thursday and Friday November 27 and November 28 for the Thanksgiving Holidays. Trash trucks will run and pick up as scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (November 24, 25, and 26). Thursday trash pickup, November 27, will be on Tuesday November 25. Friday trash pickup, November 28, will be on Wednesday November 26.

The Mason Study Club held its monthly meeting on November 12 in the Stribling Room of the Mason County Library. A delicious lunch was provided by hostesses Deanna Handlin, Chairman, Jean Dudney, Gladys Kaderka, June Hall and Jan Appleby. The program, titled “Amusing Grace – the Power of Humor in Healing”, was presented by our special guest, Ron Birk.

The final fall cooking class at the Mason county Library will be desserts. And not only one dessert but eight of Chef Nonine’s(Martha Kothmann) favorite desserts. Nanimo Bars, which are a delicious chocolate bar from Canada, are sold on the streets wrapped in saran wrap. Easy to make, you can’t stop eating them, they are addictive.

Mason ShortStop and NuWay Grocery have contacted the News and indicated that they want to revive the tradition of a contest for residents who go to the trouble of decorating their homes for the Christmas holiday. The two stores, owned by Charlie and Linda Reichenau, have offered a $300 prize for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.

James Powell “J.P.” Murray, Sr., age 73, of Brady, Texas, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2014 in Brady, Texas. He was born October 3, 1941 in Three Rivers, Texas to James Paschal Murray and Daisy Laurette (Nelson) Murray. He married Debbie Crouch on April 10, 1994 in Mason. He has lived in the area for 18 years.
