The Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association Auxiliary has traditionally offered scholarships to graduating high school seniors and continuing college students pursuing a college degree in Agriculture. It is once again time to apply for the scholarship for the school term of fall, 2016. This year there have been a few changes in our program, including the name of the organization and the person within it chairing the Scholarship committee.

KERRVILLE, TX: The Hill Country Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist will be hosting Pauline Tom as their speaker for the Monday, February 22, 2016 monthly meeting. Pauline is the President of the Texas Bluebird Society and has conducted popular workshops on bluebird husbandry in many parts of the state during the past 15 years.

Texas Country Music Hall of Famer Johnny Bush will have his annual Birthday at the Llano Country Opry on Saturday, February 13, at the Lantex Theater in Llano. The matinee show will begin at 2:30 PM and the evening show will start at 7:30 PM. Admission is $20.00 per person. Johnny Bush began his career as a member of Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys.

Today is Mardi Gras. That is French for Fat Tuesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. Tomorrow will be all about sacrifice, solemnity and observation of ritual. For today, we celebrate, and we will do so again in 40 days. Wednesday will be Ash Wednesday, marked by services around the area.

Michael Murphy has loaned for display at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library his basket collection. These baskets have been collected from different places over the last 30 years. Most are from South Africa and represent the craft of basket making as a utilitarian as well as artistic enterprise.

The Quilting Class has begun at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library! The class is full with twelve participants. Carolyn Thomas(middle, back row) is the instructor, and she brought some beautifully crafted quilts that she has created. The class will be making an Underground Railroad Sampler quilt that tells the story of the railroad—each block represents something specific about the history.

The UIL Academic team had a successful contest at the Sonora Invitational UIL Meet on February 5th. Though the meet featured some high quality 3A schools, Mason students were very competitive, with several earning medals in the competition. In Extemporaneous Persuasive Speaking, senior James Durst won 1st Place. Three Mason students placed in Extemporaneous Informative Speaking.

Last May, the Artisan Quartet delighted the listening ears of many with a classical music presentation at the Odeon Theater. Building on that classical music success, the Odeon Preservation Association is pleased to announce the first annual Mason County Chamber Music Festival being held April 1-3, 2016. The Artisan Quartet will be the festival’s Artists-in-Residence.

Mason advanced two teams to compete at State at the District Cross-Examination Debate in Harper on February 8th. In all, Mason teams earned the top four spots at the meet. Monaco Schmidt and Luke Gillespie repeated last year’s district championship by winning Monday’s meet with a perfect record. Schmidt and Gillespie, both seniors, advanced all the way to the Octofinals at the State Meet last year and hope to top that mark when they compete in March. The new guidelines allowing open carry of firearms went into effect in Texas at the beginning of the year. However, businesses and governmental bodies around the state have wrestled with the details of if, and how, to handle open carry within the areas they control.
