It is a new year and now is time for tax planning for your small business. I recently attended a seminar on tax planning. The CPA who taught the course did a great job of explaining the elements of good planning for the tax year. She highlighted the importance of good bookkeeping.

Two years ago the Friends of the Library began partnering with the Mason Library to offer Spanish-to-English classes for adults who want to learn to speak English. Since then over 40 Spanish-speaking adults and 20 volunteers have participated in this program. This is remarkable given the size of our community.

Who’s to blame for the Dysfunction in Washington? Is it the Democrats’ socialist policies or the obstructionist Republicans? Carl Jarvis, author of United States of Dysfunction, says it’s more closely related to how “We, the People, are involved in self-government. Considered among the best of today’s “non-academic” experts on American constitutional history, Jarvis will be the guest speaker at the Llano Tea Party meeting on February 5 at the American Legion Hall in Llano.

These girls from Mason competed Jan 11th in San Antonio at the Texas State Championship with Empowered’s All Star Level 3 Team (Competition cheer team out of Harper Tx) and not only received 1st place; but, received a bid (invitation) to compete at UCA International All Star Championship. The UCA International All Star Championship brings together the best all star cheer and dance teams from around the globe at the most magical place on Earth—the Walt Disney World® Resort.

The St. Joseph Catholic Church Youth Group recently attended the Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference (DCYC) in Waco, Texas where they celebrated God’s word through prayer, great music and outstanding speakers. They also celebrated Mass with Bishop Joe Vasquez on Sunday morning. These amazing young Christians represented our community with class and grace.

Clint Eastwood’s movie about the life of Chris Kyle, American Sniper, is pretty much blowing its competition out of the water at the box office lately. There’s probably a reason for that. I read the book when it came out, and I’ve followed Kyle’s experiences since then as well as I could, and he seems to have been as humble and personable as he’s been portrayed.

The Spring Session of Beginning Spanish will begin on Friday, January 30, at 3:00 P.M. at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. The Library offers the class at no cost, and Carmen Griffith will be teaching the class. Breakfast with Carmen will resume on Thursday, February 5, at 9:30 A.M.

The Hill Country Astronomers (HCA) will meet at 6:30 PM, Monday, February 2, in the HEB meeting room at the Hill Country University Center in Fredericksburg. Former shuttle astronaut Tom Henricks’ program will show what it is like to be a NASA Space Shuttle astronaut through unique video taken in the cockpit during launch and landing followed by pictures of the Earth from space and scenes of life aboard the Shuttle.

The deadline for 2014 property taxes to be paid without penalty and interest is right around the corner. Payment of bills issued by taxing entities in Mason County and across the state will become past due or delinquent after midnight on February 2. Once the deadline passes, penalty and interest automatically begin to be added to all tax bills.

Mark Klym, Information Specialist with the Wild Life Diversity of the Texas Parks & Wild Life & Project Coordinator of Texas Hummingbird Round Up gave a PowerPoint presentation on “Hummingbirds” at the January 20, 2015, meeting of the Mason Garden Club. He helped us identify the common hummingbirds, Black-chinned and Ruby-throated hummingbird of this area, plus others that also come to Mason County.

Ella is a super sweet female Dashchund Mix that is about 1 – 1 ½ years old. She is great around other dogs, and absolutely LOVES children. Ella enjoys going on walks, but is also quite content to be is a lap dog. Cute, cuddly and affectionate! What more could you ask for in a companion!

Tristan Napoleon would like to announce the arrival of his baby sister, Jamie Rae Napoleon-Jaquez, on January 16, 2015. She weighed seven pounds, one ounce, and was 19 inches long. Parents are Susan Napoleon and Hamie Jaquez of Mason. Grandparents are Linda Napoleon and Ray and Cynthia Jaquez all of Mason.
