Unless you live in a cardboard box in an alley behind a grocery store on Neptune, you know that people buy and sell stuff on Facebook. There are Facebook pages dedicated to certain types of items, where folks can post pictures of those items for sale. It’s like going to an international garage sale.

The Mason ISD Board of Trustees is in the process of selecting a new superintendent of schools due to the retirement of the current superintendent, Pam Kruse. They have employed Education Solutions, a search firm, to assist them in finding the best available candidate. Members of the Mason community are invited to attend a forum at the MISD Cafeteria from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

There is nothing that can compare to puppy kisses!!! Fritz is one of Second Chance’s most recent rescues. He is a sweet and playful puppy that is looking for his forever home. Fritz would love to be part of an active family where he will be given plenty of love and attention.

Patrons at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library have a new pastime to enjoy during their visit. They can sit down at the table and work on the communal jigsaw puzzle. The library has had jigsaws out for about four months now, some having 1,000 pieces, and folks of all ages have tried their hand.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, February 2nd for its monthly business meeting. There were 39 members and 1 visitor in attendance. Secretary Chase Smith read the minutes from the board meeting and the treasurers report was read and copies handed out by Treasurer Gayland Thorn. “Boss” Lion Joel Kuykendall was responsible for the program and introduced Chuck Heinecke who spoke about the Texas Lions Camp. Not everyone chooses to participate in the Valentine Day experience. Some have had a bad experience on that day, forgotten, breakup, etc.. Or perhaps they are just too stingy to buy a card, flowers, candy. Not to say a romantic meal is totally out of the question. Some figure that their not participating on this romantic day will have them in hot water for a while, but hopefully their romantic partner will forget and forgive in time.

I know I normally do recipes that are main dishes or side dishes but with Valentine’s Day around the corner it makes think about Red Velvet cakes. Even though my mom always made me one for my birthday in November. This is the recipe my mom used but the icing she used was different.

It seems that we just celebrated Christmas. Today, February 10, is Ash Wednesday. The Art United Methodist Church will have an Ash Wednesday Service at 6 p.m. today. Also, the first of the Lenten Lunches is today, February 10. Art UMC will host the noon meal at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

‘Z’ is for ZINC, which is an essential trace mineral. Zinc is the twenty fifth most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is water soluble and tends to be leached easily from our soils and from our food. Zinc deficiencies are fairly common since much zinc is refined and processed out of grains and other foods.
