Just received conformation from National Headquarters that Lawrence Spell, Post Commander, and Carl Tapp, Post Quartermaster, have been named National-Aide-de-camps to Commander in chief John Stroud. They were recommended for this position by State commander Joe Hayes. This is another honor for our post for the great year we had last year.

Sunday, October 26, was World Priesthood Sunday, a day to honor and show appreciation to Catholic priests. Younger Religious Education students colored pictures and older ones wrote notes to their pastor, Father Melvin Dornak. The presentation was made following Mass and he was very surprised. He also received a bag of treats and some star shaped balloons.

The Mason Garden Club met at the Mason County Library, on October 21st with 18 members present. An interesting program on “The Art of Spinning and Weaving” was presented by Brenda Pape, a Mason Weaver. She uses mohair and talked about the preparation of the mohair, such as cleaning, dying, and cording, before spinning it.

The Mason Study Club held its monthly meeting on October 22 in the Stribling Room of the Mason County Library. The hostesses for the meeting were Lynn Hedges, chairman, Joyce Mutschink, Sue Kaan and Johnny Heidelberg. Jan McCann, RN, MSHA, presented a most informative Power-Point program titled “The Concept of Dementia and Spirituality”.

The Mason Tennis Association will hold our annual mixed doubles tournament at 3:00 PM, Sunday - Nov 2nd at the Mason tennis courts with an annual membership meeting to follow at Amelia Banner’s home. All skill levels and all ages are welcome to play at 3:00 PM. We will sign up people when they arrive - mixed doubles and draw randomly for courts and partners.

On Friday night, November 7th, during the First Friday Art Walk, the Museum on the Square will feature well-known storyteller, John Davis. He will be telling ghost stories from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. around a fire pit. To quote John, “Ghost stories ... we’ve all heard them. Some of us even tell them.

The Mason Community Foundation is proud to announce that another milestone has been made, in topping the $250,000 mark (a Quarter of a Million dollars!) in grants contributed back to the community. The grants recently awarded were to the Mason Basketball Association, Steady Steps, Odeon Preservation and Mason Community Choir.

Dayna Fowler Haines is the Artist of the Month at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Dayna is an aspiring Texas artist with a highly creative and imaginative slant on life and art. She was born in Irumagawa, Japan, spent her childhood in South Texas and her adolescence in the D.C.

Carmen Griffith is teaching Beginning Spanish at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. The class meets on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:30 P.M. Materials are provided, and the class is free. Carmen also gives private lessons and offers flexible schedules. For more information, call 325-347-5446.

Mason 4-Hers participated in a food drive on October 18, collecting food for both the Food Bank and the Thanksgiving meal project sponsored by the First United Methodist Church. Thank you to everyone who shared with those in need and helped us learn about “making the best better” through community service.

The Mason 4-H club got together to enroll for the new 4-H year out at the beautiful Honey Creek Ranch. If you haven’t enrolled yet for the new year, we have to sign you up before Oct. 30 or you’ll have to pay an increased fee! Only 4-Hers 3rd grade and up have to pay, Kinder through 2nd graders are free.

When the Carper Family comes to the Odeon theater in Mason, they will take old country traditions and music out of the closet, dust them off and rekindle them on stage. Showtime is 7:00 PM Saturday, November 15. The three talented instrumentalists and vocalists play bluegrass, old-time country and swing in a style that recalls the tight acoustic bands dating back pre 1950’s.

County/District Clerk Pam Beam has reminded the News that early voting continues through 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31st. Those who requested ballots by mail are reminded that those ballots MUST be received in the County Clerk's office on Tuesday, November 4th in order to be counted. The election is on Tuesday, November 4th from 7:00 a.m.
