The Old Yeller Days Celebration to be held Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 33 p.m. on the Mason County Courthouse Lawn to honor the life of the frontier times and its literary heritage of Mason author Fred Gipson. Sponsored by the Mason County M Beven Eckert Memorial Library, the event will include Old Time Games which features amusements enjoyed in times long past.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will offer another of its Sunday Afternoon Concert Series at the church on Sunday afternoon, September 21, at 4:30 p.m. The program features internationally acclaimed Italian cellist, Francesco Mastromatteo. He will be joined by returning artist Michael Schneider, a widely experienced concert pianist who is a native of San Angelo and current faculty member at Concordia University in Austin.

Story Time is back at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library! Mitzie Lehne and Dutch were the readers for September 10, and they will be here much of the time this fall. Bring your preschoolers to join in this educational fun time on Wednesdays at 10:30 A.M.

Please join The First United Methodist Church for their Trash to Treasure Sale to be held on Saturday, September 27, in the Social Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to the completion of the new playground and the church youth. These Steady Steps children are anxious to have their play area finished!

The second annual Heart of Texas Historians & Storytellers event will take place in Brady on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Heart of Texas Events Center located at 805 San Angelo Highway 87. The program this year will feature World War II Heroes and Veterans. It begins with the Posting of the Colors by a Color Guard and will conclude with the playing of Taps.

Though I’m not a gambling person, after listening to weather reports all week predicting a rainy weekend (last weekend as you read this article) I’m going to step out boldly and say how wonderful the rain and cooler weather was. Of course, many would contend that life itself IS a gamble, and they may be right.

The Castell Area Wildlife Management Association will be meeting on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Castell, TX. Dale Schmidt of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will provide the deer harvest recommendations for this hunting season as well as an update on TPWD’s Turkey Study underway in the area.

On Monday evening, September 22, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. the English to Spanish classes will begin again. People wanting to learn or improve their English are invited to join us. Classes, which are held at the Mason County library, are free, and babysitting is provided. If you know someone who is interested, please make sure they know that all ages are eligible and everyone is welcome.

The Menard County SWCD #215 and the Menard County Agri-Life Service will host a CEU Pesticide Workshop on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Scott Zesch will be our guest speaker at the September 19th meeting of the Hilda Community Club. His topic will be “The Seaquist House: Past, Present & Future”. The Seaquist House Foundation, Inc. has recently been established and is hoping to inform the community of its plans for the house.
