The annual Membership Meeting of the Friends of the Library will be held at 6:00 p.m. on November 3, 2014. Guest speakers will be Mason’s own Garry Gamel, Editor of the Mason County News and Lauri Gray Eaton, former contributor/photographer for the San Antonio Express News. Both journalists will be discussing the role of the newspaper in our lives and what the future holds for the newspaper in rural and urban communities.

The Heart of Texas Country Music Association is proud to announce two special shows-an afternoon concert and an evening dance at the Heart of Texas Events Center on Saturday, October 25. The concert begins at 2:30 PM and the evening dance begins at 8:00 PM until Midnight. Darrell McCall, Justin Trevino, Rance Norton, Benny Deeds, Mona McCall and Jade Jack will fill the building with great music.

The local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity has been hard at working organizing the warehouse in preparation for a warehouse sale to be held on Saturday, November 1st. The warehouse is located at 125 Broad Street, just one block north of the courthouse. The sale will start at 9:00 a.m.

The Hext Volunteer Fire Department is having their annual fundraiser on Saturday, October 25th at the old school house in Hext. We are having a fish dinner with all the trimmings, dessert and tea or coffee. There will also be a raffle with six guns and about 60 other prizes. Tickets are $1 each and will be available at the fundraiser.

Dr. Paul Derrick will be at the Mason Co. Library on Saturday, October 25, to present A Beginner’s Guide to Learning the Night Sky. The program is free to the public and is from 4:00-6:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room. Dr. Derrick will return at 8:00 P.M. at the track behind the library in the Heritage Park to give a “naked eye” Sky Tour, pointing out constellations, stars, and other heavenly objects.

Just a reminder about Hannah’s Hope for a CURE 5k Walk/Run. The event will be October 25, 2014, at Fort Mason Park. Registration in advance is $25 and $30 the day of the event. Along with the 5k there will be a Kid’s Race, a silent auction with amazing items, and a raffle.

The Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library will host Harper resident and author Karen Vaucher for a special Story Time and book signing. Ms. Vaucher will be at the library on Wednesday, October 22, at 10:30 A.M. to read her new children’s book Sylvester Starr. The adventure of Sylvester Starr aims to teach kids the values of appreciating the uniqueness of life and its blessings.

Perhaps saving the best for last, the Odeon theater in Mason will screen its final documentary film of the season Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 PM. Admission is free. Tomlinson Hill, an award winning film at the prestigious Dallas Film Festival, is the story of America, as seen through the microcosm of a small Texas town called Marlin.
