Thursday, May 14 at 6:30, the Eckert James River Bat Cave will be open for the 2015 season. Twenty five years ago this land was donated to become a preserve. To celebrate this special season, several Texas Master Naturalists from Mason and their friends came together on several occasions to do trail work, improve the road going up to the parking lot and spiffed up the entrance.

The Mason County Republican Women’s will be hosting a luncheon May 20, 2105 in appreciation of all who participated by opening their homes for the annual Republican Women’s Tour of Homes Event. In addition, the luncheon will be the venue at which this years’ Republican Women’s Scholarship recipients will be announced.

Mason VFW Post 8554 will hold its monthly meeting on May the 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Post on Post Hill Street. At this time, we will discuss plans for Memorial Day and the June Post Bar-b-q. Despite popular culture, Memorial Day is not just a day off from work or a “big sale” day for the local building supplier or furniture store. Rather, this day, originally called Decoration Day, was founded as a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. The Hilda Community Club will meet this coming Friday, May 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the Hilda Community Clubhouse on Hwy. 783. This will be a covered dish supper so all attending are asked to bring a dish to share. Because of inclement weather last month, we had to cancel our meeting so the Mason Star Gazers will be here on May 15th. We will have a special program that evening with The Mason Star Gazers coming to Hilda!

As all the final details come together for Saturday's annual Habitat for Humanity Spring Benefit, President Paul Branch is keeping one eye focused on the overcast skies. The weather forecasts for Mason County have been calling for heavy rains for more than a week; but, those forecasts have yet to materialize.

We are in the process of finishing up band calendar orders. Also, if you have never placed an order but you are interested - the cost is $5 per calendar and $0.50 per listing (birthday, anniversary, etc.) We are requesting that all orders be prepaid this year and all money needs to be turned in by June 1st.

Kingdom Kids is a Mother’s Day out program based at River of Life church. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30 a.m. - 2.30 p.m. There are spaces available for full-time children, as well as accepting drop-ins on the day, from anyone in the community. We are excited to announce that there will be a 10-week summer program open for anyone age 0-8 years old (or children going into the 3rd grade).

The 11th Annual Lamplight Designs Art Competition and Exhibition will open on Friday, May 8 at Topaz Confections Bakery. Mason High School art students will be exhibiting works reflecting a range of medium including painting, drawing, and mixed media. The exhibition will be on display for one week with an opening reception on Friday, May 8 from 5:30-6:30.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 285 will be having a garage sale fundraiser on Saturday, June 6th, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Any donations of gently used clothing, housewares or other items would be greatly appreciated.
