Tryouts for next year’s junior high and high school cheerleading squads and mascot are fast approaching. The date of the try out will be Wednesday, March 2nd. Interested candidates currently enrolled at Mason ISD in 6th through 11th grade interested in trying out will need to attend the mandatory meeting, with a parent, on Wednesday, February 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale for the Hill Country CattleWomen’s 3rd Annual Spring Round-Up. This event funds the scholarships we award, beef education and beef promotion. Our theme this year will be patriotic, and the Round-Up will be held April 16, 2016 from 5:30pm to 11:00pm, at the Hangar Hotel and Convention Center in Fredericksburg. The Fredericksburg Chorale will present its New Works Concert, The Song of Nature, on Saturday, February 6 at 3 PM at St. Joseph’s Halle, 212 W. San Antonio. This concert is entirely devoted to newly written works by local composers. In this case, all the works were written by members of the Chorale or by Mark Hierholzer, the Chorale’s director. The 5th annual Mason County Youth Rally will be held Feb. 6 at the Community Building. All 6-12th grade students are invited to the biggest non school youth function of the year. This year, a vehicle decorating contest will be held. All licensed high school students with street-legal vehicles are eligible to participate.

This Saturday the 4th Annual Mason Band Auction will be held live on 102.5 KHLB from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is our 4th year to have this fundraiser and to have it hosted on 102.5. We are excited and looking forward to all of the neat items we have to sell. Every kid in band is asked to bring an item to sell at the auction.

The 7th Annual Harper 5K, benefiting Harper PTO, will be Sunday, Feb. 28th at 2:30 p.m. in the Harper Community Park. The Kid’s Fun Run will start at 3:30 p.m. Race Fees are $25 for 5K ($30 after Feb 8th), and includes a Tech Tee (adult sizes only, cotton shirt for Youth Sizes) with medals for Overall and Age Group Awards.

On January the 27th, the Vietnam war ended for the United States, with the signing of the Vietnam peace accord. The Mason VFW Post 8554 will hold an observance of this date on the 26th at 2 p.m. at the Post. The Post is located on Post Hill Street behind the jail.

The local Habitat for Humanity group has been hard at work preparing to build this year's newest home. This is an incredible event for our small community and many people are involved. There will be four Care-A-Van groups coming from all over the United States to help build these homes.

On Monday, February 1, 2016, the Mason County Republican Party will hold a candidate forum at the Library starting at 7:00 PM. Candidates for County Commissioner in Precincts 1 and 3 plus County Attorney and other local candidates will be present. All will share views for the future of Mason County.

The regular meeting of the Mason VFW Post 8554 will be held on the 19th of January at 6:30 p.m. at the Post. I encourage all members to attend. We will need to elect a couple of new officers. And the trustee audit is due to the state.

Mark your calendars to attend the “Dining with the Governors” luncheon, which will be held at the Lea Lou Co-op (formerly Grosse Lumber and Hardware) on the Square in Mason. The luncheon will be on Saturday, February 20th starting at 11:30AM. The luncheon will follow an historic theme taking the guests on a food journey through the pages of Texas history.
