On the 14th of February, at 7 p.m. at Nacho’s, we will have our Post dinner and remember the sinking of the USS Maine. This is an important event to the VFW. It started the Spanish American War which led to the start up of the VFW. So bring your wives and enjoy a great meal and help remember the Maine. Keith Kaan will be the guest speaker at the Hilda Community Club meeting on Friday, February 20th at the Hilda Community Clubhouse on RR 783. His topic will be “Building Green.” Pat & Marnee Loftin are the hosts. Please bring a dessert or side dish. Supper will be served and then we will hear Keith’s presentation.

Texas Country Music Hall of Famer Johnny Bush will celebrate his 80th Birthday at the Llano Country Opry on Saturday, February 14, at the Lantex Theater in Llano. The matinee show will begin at 2:30 PM and the evening show will start at 7:30 PM. Admission is $20.00 per person. Johnny Bush began his career as a member of Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys.

The Long Mountain cooks are coming out of hibernation Friday night at 6:30 PM February the 13th and will have our monthly covered dish supper after a month’s layoff. You all come and enjoy a round of stories and games. I am at a loss for words so the floor will be open.

Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras is the day preceding Ash Wednesday…the first day of Lent, which this year is on February 18th. Shrove comes from the word shrive, meaning confess and is observed by Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, Roman Catholics…(and open to all who like pancakes.) On Ash Wednesday, February 18th, we will celebrate the beginning of Lent with a worship service at 7:00 p.m. which will include the imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion. Our theme for Lent this year will be “Holy Moses”, which will involve a series of six Lenten dramas in which we will be taken on a trip with Moses and the Hebrew people, as they retell and relive the greatest salvation event of the Old Testament.

The Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library and The Piatigorsky Foundation will host world-class pianist Richard Dowling at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 22, at 2:00 P.M. The event is free to the public, but donations will be accepted. Hailed by The New York Times as “an especially impressive fine pianist,” RICHARD DOWLING appears regularly throughout the United States in solo recitals, at chamber and jazz/ragtime festivals, and as guest soloist with orchestras.

The Mason National Honor Society chapter, in association with the United Blood Services, will be sponsoring its Mason High School Blood Drive Wednesday, February 11th. Donors may visit the technology lab in the main high school building at any time between 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Any individual 17 years or older is eligible to donate, though 17-year-olds will need parental consent.

It may not be Halloween, but the Heart of Texas Chapter of the DRT will be hearing about and discussing the “Graveyards of McCulloch County” at their next meeting on Monday, February 9 at 4:00 p.m. Alvin Bolton, a member of the McCulloch County Historical Commission will be the guest speaker along with DRT Member Biddy Harkrider, also a member of the Historical Commission.
