Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor Virdell, Sr., of Llano, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 5, 2014. Close friends and family joined them at their home in Llano to congratulate them on this momentous occasion. Taylor and Annelle (Lehmberg) were married at First United Methodist Church in Austin, while Taylor was serving as an aerial engineer in the United States Air Force during World War II and Annelle was working at Bergstrom Field in Austin. Sacrifice and commitment by Mason High School students and academic coaches earned MHS the 2014 academic championship. Competing against 11 district schools Mason High captured the District 29-A Spring Meet title. When points from all academic events and one act play were awarded MHS scored 395 points well ahead of second place Harper with 317 points.

In January, 1999, with the encouragement and advice of the late Dr. Jackie Hunt, St. Paul Lutheran Wellness Exercise Class was organized. This is the project of the St. Paul Lutheran Parish Nurse. At middle age, there is the beginning of Sarcopenia (muscle loss) and Osteoporosis (bone loss). Each condition may be slowed by exercise and better nutrition. Last Friday, there was a balloon release up at the Mason Elementary School. The groups participating were: Bluebonnet CASA, Mason County Child Welfare Board and the Hill Country Children Advocate Center. Balloons were released at 10:00 a.m. They released 43 blue balloons for the children they have in care at Bluebonnet CASA and 156 white balloons for the number of child fatalities due to child abuse or neglect in the state of Texas this year.

South Plains College of Levelland, Texas has invited Lydia Bierschwale to receive a full scholarship to be on their rodeo team. Here is Lydia as she signed her Letter of Intent. Raymond Uherek got this 5’3” rattlesnake (tip to tip) on Monday. He was just outside their yard fence crossing the road when Raymond arrived in his Jeep. No gun along so he pounded the snake's head with rocks. The second snake is a unique specimen caught by Jeff Grote. The snake has no markings; but, still had a lot of rattler attitude!

On Friday, March 28th, the Mason Study Club hosted the Care-A-Vanners for lunch at the First United Methodist Church. Doug and Carol Holmes made their famous tomato-basil soup and other Club members contributed a variety of sandwiches and desserts. These seventeen Care-A-Vanners will complete the construction of the 2014 Habitat Home.

We had a great convention Saturday! There were 21 loyal Democrats in attendance. Dan Barton manned the registration table and Mary Freytag was elected Secretary. We opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag and joined together to sing the “Star Spangled Banner”. We sounded pretty darned good, too! Many local issues were discussed, including the past primary, ACA enrollment, and voter registration.
