Albert and Shirley Keyser were named Outstanding Conservation Rancher for 2014 by the Mason County Soil and Water Conservation District. Mr. and Mrs. Keyser run a ranch in the loyal Valley community. They have always been conservation minded. They practice proper grazing techniques and rotate cattle to allow rest periods for the grass.

In November Hill Country Memorial received a top safety rating from the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score. Hospital Safety Scores can range from 1.0 to 4.0, and HCM received a score of 3.3077, earning it a grade of “A.” “By participating in the Hospital Safety Score, HCM has demonstrated a commitment to transparency,” said Emily Padula, HCM’s executive over quality.

Art United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Castell have been enjoying a new pastor for several months now. They have been so busy settling in with their new pastor, they only just now realized they had not introduced he and his wife to the Mason community. Rev John Alsbrooks was born and raised in East Texas.

At the end of 2014, two long time employees of The Commercial Bank will be "hanging up their hats" and beginning their retirement. The bank will be hosting a farewell party in conjunction with their Christmas open house this year; but, the News wanted to make sure that folks attending the reception have all the information they need about the two honorees. The Board of Directors voted on December 15th to promote Jay Tedder to Vice President of the Bank effective January 1, 2015. Tedder joined the bank’s staff as a loan officer in September 2009 after a 17 year career in law enforcement. He has attended numerous lending and compliance training programs over the past 5 years and is a licensed mortgage loan officer.

Bill and Beady Beam celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary over the Thanksgiving holidays with their children and grandchildren. Will W. (Bill) Beam, from Mason, attended UT after graduating from high school. After a year of schooling, he volunteered for the Army and spent a year in Japan. He then returned to UT and entered the ROTC program, pursuing a pharmaceutical degree and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.

Tanya Buys of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Dan and Judith Barton of Mason announce the engagement of Chrysteena Lairamore and James Barton. Chrysteena will complete her MBA at San Francisco State University in the spring of 2015. James is a partner with Point Forward in Redwood City, California. The couple is planning a wedding in March, 2015, in Austin, Texas.

Kelley, Britny (Lehmberg) and Pierce Fowler are thrilled to announce that they have added another precious miracle to their family. The newest blessing is a baby girl, Arabelle Joy Fowler, born September 4, 2014, in Austin, Texas. She weighed in at seven pounds and a quarter ounce, and was 19.5 inches long.

The joys of Christmas! Carolers make their way around the community singing glorious songs about the birth of Jesus. Twinkling lights and glistening ornaments and ribbons hang festively on Christmas trees with beautifully wrapped gifts snuggled underneath. Children run inside for hot cocoa (with marshmallows!) after a day of playing hard in the cold.

The Mason County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting last Thursday to welcome its newest member, Farmer's Insurance. The local office is located at 411 Fort McKavitt St., Suite A and is operated by agent Kyle Allen. The office is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering insurance for home, auto, life commercial and health.

PANACEA was created in line with Sally Martin’s values of bringing people together around meaningful experiences. To date, TDA has recognized more than 4,800 properties in 237 counties across Texas. AUSTIN – In a celebration of agriculture and family heritage, the Texas Department of Agriculture today honored 82 farms and ranches spanning 61 Texas counties at the 39th Annual Family Land Heritage (FLH) ceremony. The ceremony, held in the House Chamber at the Texas State Capitol, recognizes Texas families who have kept their farms and ranches in continuous agricultural production for 100 years or more.

Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, the Class of ‘49, held their 65th Reunion at the Peter’s Prairie School House. There were 43 in the graduating class in 1949 and there are 26 still living with 14 attending the reunion. Many of those did not attend due to health problems. We saw a few more canes and a little more forgetfulness of recent events.
