Mason, Texas in the 1880-1890’s was a bustling Hill Country town with a population that grew from 2644 to over 5000. The Courthouse Square boasted all the trappings of a good ‘Wild West’ town; a hardware store, tin shop, grocery and hardware stores and a saloon just off the corner of Fort McKavitt St.

Several area Mason kids competed this last week at the American Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA) finals in Sweetwater, TX. Chainey Weitz won her first saddle and is the 2014 9-12 Pole Bending World Champion. Chet Weitz won 2014 13-15 year end All Around Cowboy World Champion and Finals All Around Cowboy.

MASON, TX – The 33rd Annual Country Showdown local competition concluded on July 11, naming 17 year-­old Shelby Comey from Mason, TX, as the winner, who will compete at the state finals on August 22 at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth. America’s largest country music talent search and radio promotion was held at Fort Mason City Park during Mason Chamber of Commerce’s Texas Tune­Up and Mason’s Rodeo Roundup Weekend.

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) invited a select group of approximately 2,250 young men and women from around the nation and internationally to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program this year. Summer Seminar is a fast-paced experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school and are considering applying for admission to USNA after graduation. Once again Mason lured hundreds of top tennis players to town as the Dr Pepper/Babolat Open was played last weekend. The tournament started on Thursday with a four hour rain delay. That delay didn’t dampen the spirits of the 600 entries what-so-ever. The tournament is hosted each year by the Mason Tennis Association and is sponsored by the Mason Bottling Company and Babolat.

The MHS class of ‘79 met at Peters Prairie on July 12th. We had 34 in attendance, with one traveling from New Jersey and one from California. A lot of laughs and wild stories were told. Looking forward to the next gathering and hope to see more classmates, especially the ones that live around here!

A grand opening was held at Cooper’s Original Pit Bar-B-Q on Saturday, July 19th. There was live music, live radio with Lone Star 102.5 FM, free drawings, a washer pitching contest, and a jumping castle for the kids. A drawing was held every two hours for a link of sausage.

The class of 1984 had their 30th class reunion at Willow Creek Café on Saturday July 12. There were 15 actual members of the class and 6 guests. Everyone enjoyed reminiscing and catching up. Many stories and pictures were shared. It didn’t seem like 30 years since we were listening to “Like A Virgin” on our cassette players and gas was a $1.00.

The Mason County Chamber of Commerce held their 1st Annual Stick Donkey Race during the 50th Annual Round-up Celebration. It was a huge success! Each child came ready to race with their very own “homemade” stick donkey. The winners for the 5 & 6 year old group were First Place – Thomas Fuller, Second Place - Maria Victoria Hinckley and Third Place - Solanus Hinckley.

SEARCY, AR (07/11/2014) - Mason resident Paden Hemphill, a senior at Harding University, is among more than 1,200 University students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring 2014 semester. A new exhibit at Mason Square Museum on the north side of the square tells some of the stories of Mason Volunteer Fire Department over the past 108 years. The Lions Club District 2-A1 Has for it’s new District Governor; John Gammill of the Mason Lions Club, Gammill is the first Lion from the Mason Lions Club to serve as District Governor. Gammill will be Governor for the 2014-2015 Lions Year. District 2-A1 is an expansive West Texas district that stretches from Kingsland to Midland and Sweetwater to Junction.
