FORT WORTH, TEXAS - KIRSTEN SHAW, a FFA member from MASON, exhibited the 1ST PLACE HEAVEY WEIGHT in the Junior WETHER GOAT Show at the 2014 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on FEBRUARY 2. The 2014 Show hosted nearly 10,000 junior exhibitors from across Texas, competing for prizes and $107,885.00 in premiums. Since 1896, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo has remained a prominent event in the livestock industry.

February 12, 2014 (FHTNC)--Navy Seaman John W. Rocha, son of John P. Rocha of Austin, Texas and Tammy Gardner of Mason, Texas, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Rocha completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Ellie Blair, daughter of Michele and Paul Smith was accepted into the study-abroad program at Texas State University and is currently studying International Business in Mosbach, Germany. Ellie has made the Deans List at Texas State University for the last 2 years, will graduate in December 2014 and plans to continue her education towards her Masters.

JB! 1 Year Old – Male (Neutered) Labrador Retriever / Red Heeler Loving, Loyal, Playful, Happy and VERY SMART! This just about sums up JB! JB would make a wonderful companion for an active family or individual. He is great with other dogs. Especially ones that are around the same age, and who love to play.

This past Saturday, kids from Mason High School and Junior High performed at the Region Solo & Ensemble contest which was held at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. Four high school kids performed piano solos. Kendra Klaerner and Levi Hoffman each performed a class 2 piano solo and both received a 1st division.

Our FREE SPAY AND NEUTER CAMPAIGN continues and here are a few statistics from 2012. Second Chance has spayed 25 female cats and kittens. Now this may not seem like a huge number but here are the facts. One pair of cats can produce 3 litters each year and, for the sake of this article, we will say that each litter consists of 4 kittens, two of which are female.

Mason Junior High is so proud of our 7th and 8th grade Gifted & Talented students that competed in the Area 15 Robotics Inventions Contest in Robert Lee, Texas. We had ten students from four teams travel to compete in the Inventions Division of the Area 15 Robotics Competition. The goal of the Robotics Inventions division is to create and program a robot to do a specific job or task.

On Wednesday, January 22nd, the Mason Study Club presented a donation to Patti Grote, Librarian for the Mason County Library. This check represents the proceeds from The Club’s “Chili on the Square” that was in November. The weather that day was beautiful and the turnout was tremendous. (It never ceases to amaze this author how generous the people and businesses in Mason are.) Presenting the check to Patti is Club president, Judy Branch.
