Mason High School was well represented at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest on Memorial Day in Pflugerville. Competing in piano with memorized solos were Luke Gillespie and Jackson Chapman. Jackson received a 2nd division for his solo. Also competing was Faith Ingracia. Faith did a twirling solo and received a 1st division.

The Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country presented TWO awards at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony, May 19, to graduating Seniors Cassie Benefield and Ashlyn Brandenberger. Cassie entered the competition with videos of her outstanding piano performances and, also, evidence of her acting/drama and ART abilities. Her sponsoring teacher is Dawn Hahn.

Taylor Garrett, grandson of Danny and Florence Smith of Mason, and a member of the Tucson Border Patrol Honor Guard Drill Team won 1st place at the 12th Annual Steve Young Honor Guard competition in Washington D.C. on May 14th. The Honor Guard was recognized as the best law enforcement drill team in the U.S.

Erin Lynn Brown, daughter of David and Janna Brown of Austin, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas A&M University with a degree in Animal Science. Erin is the granddaughter of Frank and Margaret Brown of Hilda and Lloyd and Jerry Coats of Dallas.

Robert Price Ruffin, a graduating senior from Mason High School, has been awarded a fouryear $5,000.00 Youth Livestock Scholarship sponsored by the State Fair of Texas. The $1,250.00 a year scholarship is renewable by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to academically talented students who graduate from high schools in the Dallas State Fair Park area. At this year's Spring All Sports Banquet, former members of Coach Paul Smith's tennis teams paid tribute to their former coach. Those students, and their tributes, follow. They are: Traci Jordan, Coby Velez, Claudia Canfield, Carley Chew, Leret Hemphill and Price Ruffin. Nick Dyer made the plaque presentation. Traci: Coach Smith been coaching for 39 years, and 30 of them have been right here in Mason.

There were boys on it too but I remember the girls better because, well, they were girls and I only 8 or 9 years old and they teased me. Being an only child, this was about the first time I met the opposite sex en masse. My first reaction was, "They are different, interesting and as I got older, they got very interesting, but there was no contact." At that time, girls wore skirts, no jeans, pants were looked as evil.

The Mason High School class of 1948 celebrated its 66th reunion on April 26, 2014, at the Willow Creek Cafe. Some fun facts about the class: forty eight seniors graduated on May 26, 1948. The story goes that it was the largest graduating class in the history of the school up until that time.

Last Wednesday, May 14th, several members of the Mason Study Club presented a donation to Patti Grote for the Library. This donation represents the proceeds from the Study Club’s recent silent auction that took place during the month of April. Pictured with this article are Barbara Brunken, Diane Evans, Gladys Kaderka, Karen Olson, Patti Grote, and Rosemary Davis. The month of April was very busy for so many of Mason’s organizations.

The Mason County Chamber of Commerce held an official ribbon cutting to welcome the reopening of Benjie's Book & Gift Store under the ownership of Beatrice Ramon. Benjie’s Book & Gift Store is open Monday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They carry books, greeting cards, jewelry and they have gifts for any occasion.
