Dr. William E. Moerner, with family roots into Mason County, received word on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, that he was one of three recipients of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, announced in Stockholm, Sweden. Moerner, known by his family as W. E., along with two other scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for advancing the range of light microscopes into new realms, enabling researchers for the first time to see inside single protein molecules and bacteria in the human body.

Last Saturday the Mason Puncher Band attended the Region 7 UIL Marching competition in Early, TX. The band received a 1st division rating from the judges, the highest rating that they could achieve. “I was really proud of the kids, they have worked really hard this year and it paid off on Saturday,” said director Bobby Halamicek.

Together with big sister Macy, “Tooter” & Jimma Robertson of Boerne are proud to announce the birth of John Preston Robertson III. Born on September 4, Preston weighed eight pounds, one ounce, and was 21.5 inches. Proud grandparents are Jim & Kitty Cone of Llano.

On September 16, 2014, MMC (SS) Scott M. Williams was "capped" at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. He is the son of Gary and Barbara Williams, and the grandson of Joan Williams and the late Cecil Williams of Mason.

Miss Rhonda's Dance Studio, owned by Rhonda Mann (far right), held their formal ribbon cutting as a member of the Mason County Chamber of Commerce last week. Rhonda is excited to be in Mason after having decided to establish a permanent business in the community. She originally opened her studio in Houston in 1976 where she stayed for 15 years with over 800 students during that time.

Mary Lou (Miss Lou) Lange was honored with a party recently by her friend/caregiver, Yolanda Garza Hernandez. Friends gathered to celebrate and to wish Miss Lou a happy 87th birthday. Miss Lou enjoyed herself immensely and appreciated all who came to her party.

Raylee Keyser of Brady, Texas is excited to announce the arrival of her new baby brother, Rhett Haden Keyser, born at 8:48 a.m. on September 8, 2014, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital. Rhett weighed in at nine pounds, two ounces and was 20.5 inches in length. Parents are Haden and Kim Keyser of Brady, TX; grandparents are Joyce Keyser of Mason, TX, and Linda & Bob Bleau of Hatboro, PA.

The Grange is proud to support The Dictionary Project through its Words for Thirds program. Through tireless efforts of the Grange’s network of more than 200,000 volunteers, America’s oldest rural and agriculture organization has presented third grade students across the nation with more than 100,000 dictionaries. These dictionaries are compliments of Leon Valley Grange, an Agricultural-based Community Service organization, promoting education of youth in Texas.

Two students, Bridgit Herrington and Evelia Lopez, from St. Joseph Parish, Mason, received the Sacrament of Confirmation on September 13. After attending summer classes to prepare to be fully initatied into the Catholic Church, they joined students from Holy Cross Parish in Bertram and Our Mother of Sorrows Parish in Burnet.

This past Wednesday, the annual FFA Greenhand Leadership Camp was held at the Fredericksburg, Texas, High School. The event was put on to encourage incoming greenhands (first year FFA students) to break out of their comfort zone and engage in activities that promote leadership. During the September 22nd meeting of the Mason I.S.D. Board, the group selected a contractor to begin contract negotiations with in order to move ahead with construction of the new junior high wing. Four bids were received for the project, ranging from $2,994,000 to $3,313,194. Construction times submitted by the bidders ranged from 242 days up to 360 days.

At the end of May, the Mason ISD hosted its annual Academic Excellence Awards Banquet. The students of Mason High School were honored for their hard work during the course of the year in maintaining a high average in each six weeks. The Education Foundation takes pride in their tradition of saluting the students of MHS who work hard all year long and maintain the tradition of excellence in our school.
