The Mason Punchers started the 2015-2016 basketball season at the Rocksprings Tournament winning all four games to take first place. The team played extremely well for the first games of the season passing the ball extremely well and attacking the basket to draw some early fouls in the game. Rebounding was also a key in their wins by averaging pulling down eight more rebounds per game than their opponents.

The JV boys basketball teams traveled to Junction last weekend to play in their JV Tournament. The Punchers played very well for their first outing beating Comfort 24-22. The next game the Punchers fell short, falling to Bandera 35-31. In the Third place game the Punchers took on Leakey and trailed for much of the game.

The freshman boys basketball team played last weekend in the Irion County JV Tournament. The boys played well for the first week of playing. They hustled and played great defense which helped the go 5-3 in the tournament. Lingering injuries and a run of stomach illnesses hamstrung the Punchers last Friday as they met up with the Refugio Bobcats in San Antonio. The Punchers were never able to get the traction they needed, and the strong Refugio team hammered Mason at every turn. Refugio scored early in the first quarter, then shortly before the end of the period and closed out the first quarter 14-0. In the second quarter, the Bobcats scored three times.

The 2015 football playoffs began on Friday as Mason headed to Austin and met up with Rosebud-Lott at the Tony Burger Stadium. The Punchers would put their stamp on the game in the opening minutes. Rosebud received the ball to open the game; but, the Punchers pushed them deep into their own territory, before finally forcing a punt.

Bert Nesloney attended the game this past weekend pitting Hardin Simmons versus Louisiana College. Hardin Simmons won the game 82-21 and clinched home field advantage for the playoffs . The Cowboys will play inter-conference rival Mary Hardin Baylor with the game to start at 12 on Saturday. Burt says that the boys size and strength can be attributed to not only picking watermelons on his farm but eating them as well.

On Friday November 6, 2015, a mild overcast day, Bob Lemley set out to kayak from Castell General Store to Schneider’s Crossing on the Llano River. Fly Fishing along the way, he caught 34 fish, 30 Blue Gill Perch and four Guadalupe Bass, in three and one-half hours. The Cowgirls wrapped up their season placing sixth as a team this past Saturday at the 2015 State Cross Country Championships. They were led by state medalist, Ella Canfield, who placed 10th overall in Class 2A! The course at Old Settler’s Park had been rained on for a day and a half prior to our race which began at 2:40.

The JV White played their last game of the 2015 season last Thursday traveling to Cross Plains. The Punchers lost 38-6 but never stopped playing hard. The coaches are proud of the progression the team and players made over the season. The punchers ended the season 1-5.

The final regular season game of 2015 turned out to be the toughest yet for the Mason Punchers. They welcomed the Eagles to town on Friday night, and it proved to be a hard fought game that tested both teams. The Punchers and the Eagles fought all during the first quarter and it would not be until late in the period that Seth Hudson finally broke free and flew over the goal line after a 24-yard run.
