The 2015 Dr Pepper/Babolat Open Tennis Tournament was another huge success this year as it attracted players from as far as Venezuela. Many local juniors and adults competed in this year’s tournament and fared very well. As always, the Mason Tennis Association thanks the Mason Bottling Company for its continued support with the awards and concessions as well as Babolat Tennis for donation of the tennis balls for the tournament.

The Mason 4H Archery Club was well represented at last weekend's archery shoot in Callahan County. The group all did very well with an overall 1st place Team Award. The team consisted of coach-Jody Ake, Sr.-Daniel Gainer, Intermediate-K.O. Tedder and Jr-Witt Tedder. J.J Ake received 1st place individual for the Intermediate group, K.O.

The summer tennis season got its start last weekend in Mason as the Mason Tennis Association hosted the Summer Swing Tournament. This is the first of several “Swing” tournaments in the hill country. Fredericksburg, San Saba, and Kerrville will also host similar tournaments. The draws were a little smaller this year because it was so early in the summer, but some real good tennis was played by many of the area players.

The Girls Varsity Softball team had a great season, and have received a number of district awards. The Mason Puncher track team finished off a very successful track season this past weekend at the state meet held at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin. The boys competed very well and ran some very good times in the biggest meet of the season, including a new school record in the 300H.

Mason took eleven players to the state tournament last Tuesday to compete in the UIL State Championships. We knew going into the tournament that weather was going to be a factor and we knew that we had a very young bunch of kids with little experience at the state meet.

The 7th grade Punchers participated in the Sonora Bronco Open last Monday. The Punchers took second place with a nine hole score of 227. The Punchers were led by Aaron Reardon who carded a round of 47. Aaron’s round of 47 was low enough to capture the second place honors for all 7th and 8th graders who participated that day.

Mason’s summer tennis camp has been scheduled for June 8th through June 18th at the Mason School courts. This camp will be for players of all ages and there will be three 1.5 hour time blocks. Beginners will meet from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., intermediates from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., and advanced from 11:00 a.m.

What a fun and amazing golf season we enjoyed this year. Arriving in Austin last week, we were not a hundred percent sure what to expect but we knew we had our work cut out for us. Tuesday we played a practice round in high cold winds. It looked like rain but not a drop.

The Mason Puncher track team had a great day in their final preparations for the regional meet. Two school records were broken in the 4x400 Relay and in the 300H. The team of Luis Castillo, Miguel Castillo, Go Chanriang, and Elijah Timms ran a time of 3:20.24 setting a new school record.

The Punchers’s Garrett Bibb comes through in the clutch, upends Ozona, 4-3. Garrett Bibb drove in the go-ahead run to give Punchers the lead in the sixth inning, as Punchers hung on to beat Ozona 4-3 on Tuesday. Luis Castillo singled to get on base in the sixth. He then went from first to third on an error. Bibb racked up two RBIs on one hit for Punchers. Miguel Castillo handled Ozona’s lineup with ease, racking up seven strikeouts.
