The first regular game of the 2015 season saw the Mason Punchers welcome the Ozona Lions to the Puncherdome last Friday night. The Ozona team has been going through a rebuilding process; and, on Friday night, they still weren't able to pull together enough resistance to stop the Punchers. The Mason team has a lot of new personnel in key positions; and, a large contingent of senior players.

The Punchers welcomed Blanco to town last Thursday for their final scrimmage of the 2015 season. This Friday night, the Punchers will welcome the Ozona Lions to Puncher Stadium for the first pre-conference game of the season. The JV White and JV Purple teams will both be playing out of town on Thursday night.

The 2015 football season kicked off last Saturday when the Punchers traveled to Hamilton to scrimmage the Bulldogs. Fans will be able to see the Puncher teams at home this Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. at R. Clinton Schulze Stadium for a scrimmage against long-time rival Blanco.

Hill Country Memorial, orthopedic surgeons and rehab specialists are teaming up to offer free orthopedic and physical therapy evaluations to middle and high school athletes on Saturdays beginning August 29 and continuing through November 7. The drawing for the 2016 Puncher home game box seat tickets will be held on Wednesday, August 26th at 10:00 a.m. The drawing will be held at the Administration Office on the north side of the square (200 Ft. McKavitt St.). In order to be entered into the drawing, a check for $240 needs to be delivered to the Administrative office prior to the drawing date.

All junior high football players can get their equipment for this season on August 18th at 7 p.m. in the junior high gym. Our coaches will be there to get all 7th and 8th football players fitted for the first practice on the first day of school (August 24th).

Head Coach Kade Burns has informed the News that this Saturday's scrimmage against Hamilton will have a bit of a change in format. The scrimmage begins at 10:00 a.m. in Hamilton; but, it will begin with the Varsity squads, followed by the Junior Varsity. This is opposite the usual scrimmage schedules; but, Coach Burns wanted fans to know so that they will be able to arrive in time to see their team on the field.

This past weekend the Mason County Chamber of Commerce held their 2nd Annual Softball Classic at the Ft. Mason Park baseball fields. The tournament was a huge success! There were a total of six teams entered into the tournament. After approximately 11 hours of games, Texas Smoke ended up with the 1st place prize.

It has been a busy and exciting summer for the Mason Jr. High Cheerleaders. They started off their summer with a bang. The girls entered the Mason County Round Up Parade and were thrilled to receive a 2nd place ribbon for their float. Their next big adventure was UCA Cheerleading Camp held July 21st – 24th at Angelo State University.

Faith Ingracia, the feature twirler for the puncher band, participated in the National Baton Twirling Competition held at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. She placed third in Flag Baton, third in Twirling Two Batons, tenth in X-Strut, tenth in Solo, and twenty first out of fifty in Twirling Three baton.

Summer is quickly coming to an end and the start of school is nearing! With that comes summer band practice. Practice schedule is very similar to last year’s and hasn’t changed from the papers that were sent home at the end of last school year. But just in case anyone has lost or forgotten, the schedule is below. Please remember to wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothes.

Mason Cowgirl Basketball Camp will begin Monday, Aug. 3 and run through Thursday, Aug. 6. The camp is for all girls that will be entering 3rd through 9th grade for the upcoming school year. The cost will be $50 per child. It will start at 1pm each day and end at 4pm.

The 2015 Dr Pepper/Babolat Open Tennis Tournament was another huge success this year as it attracted players from as far as Venezuela. Many local juniors and adults competed in this year’s tournament and fared very well. As always, the Mason Tennis Association thanks the Mason Bottling Company for its continued support with the awards and concessions as well as Babolat Tennis for donation of the tennis balls for the tournament.
